except as part of this weird trend of never setting anything outside of the East Coast or LA

It's not some grand conspiracy or anything... LA, New York, Toronto, and Vancouver are where all the major film/television production studios and casting agencies are located, so setting stories in/near those locations simply makes the most sense from a convenience and budget management perspective.

Finished up The Mosquito Coast. The ending was actually rather upbeat, which was the perfect way to end the season. It was more violent than it needed to be, but overall I enjoyed the ride.

Mythic Quest did another flashback story, this time to the 1970s when CW was getting started in writing. It was a great episode. As with last season, this 1-off that doesn't advance the plot is probably going to be the best episode of the season. (That's not in any way a criticism of the show, by the way.)

We started watching the latest season of Kim's Convenience which was discussed here recently. If you liked previous seasons, you'll probably like this season. Janet is back from her summer in Africa with Raj and wants to continue working to help out less privileged people. Jung is in LA getting a business degree (with frequent visits from friends and trips back to Toronto). The parents are still running the store.

I see that Home Before Dark starts up again this Friday. I'm pretty excited about it. I thought the first season was excellent, which I was not expecting at all. We started watching it because there was nothing else on, and I was kind of dreading it, but it turned out to be really good. It's a fictionalized telling of the true story of a young girl (I think she's in like 4th grade?) who starts her own newspaper and investigates a kidnapping that her father was involved in as a kid. One of the father's childhood friends was kidnapped and never found. They never determined who did it or what happened to either the child or the perpetrator. In season 1, she figures it out, but it leads to more questions which will, hopefully, be answered in season 2.
