Redditors of Tildes, which subreddits are you missing the most during the blackout?

I am really struggling without r/selfhosted. I truly believe it is, by far, the best community for self-hosters that I have come across. What I am missing most of all is, whenever I search for questions to self-hosting problems - especially for smaller projects - the answers are nearly always found within posts on that sub.

At least with things like programming, there is stackoverflow and a bunch of other small communities.

I'm going to end up going to Discord to find my solutions, which is the next big community. But it means having to go on there and ask the question (that has probably been asked hundreds of times before), rather than just searching the issue.

Yeah. The subreddit for my current town was really great about keeping updated on happenings around the area, and I've seen some of the prettiest photos of the last big city I lived in on their subreddit. There's something that will be hard to replicate without Facebook. I refuse to set foot on there unless it's under duress, so I definitely understand!

I would give it consideration if anything, just for the groups on there. You can always have just not add anyone in real life that you don't want or care to see. That's pretty much what I did and its been working out well. I go on there for the groups.

This is basically how I use FB now. There are some very useful groups for applying to Middle School and High School for my city that I have been visiting for my kids. I'm also lurking in the applying to and paying for college groups. And there's one group of moms that I visit now and again (although I mainly just hang out IRL with one friend from that group). I rarely glance at my feed, maybe for a minute or two. I'm there just for the info from the groups, then I bounce.

I can relate. I mod our local city sub r/lexington. We have 3 mods, the creator, myself, and one we brought on from a local Discord server. They buckled under the tension to go public. I should have been more outspoken.

The atmosphere we found ourselves in was a "hate if we do, and hate if we don't" type situation, and there was no winning either way. Local subreddits are vital to communities... Hell I had the best weekend of the summer so far last Friday because a pop-up comedy show was being thrown less than 1,000 ft from my house I came across on the sub.

Right now (and not just bc Reddit is falling apart), I use Instagram (following accounts that post about free things to do and new or underrated places to visit in NYC) and emails Isubscribe to (directly from the cultural institutions or organizations, but also from The Skint, Time Out New York, and kid friendly blogs like Mommy Poppins and A Child Grows in Brooklyn). I also visit the website Gothamist, which has an arts and culture section. I may have to also visit City-Data. There used to be a few Brooklyn centric forums but I can't seem to find them

The hyper SEO optimized sites broke Google for me.

The effects of this cannot be overstated, especially for anyone who remembers "the before days" of the web. Any time I am searching for any useful discussion about a product or any sort of topic, I really can't just search for it anymore, because all I'm going to find are content-generated SEO sites that probably don't have any useful info, are infuriating to get to any info that might actually be useful, and are almost certainly not neutral or up front about about their biases. I can't find actual discussion from experts (at best you might get a very sanitized expert writing that you should consult an expert - great, very useful).

I used to rant about this over on reddit every so often, but this is the consequence of the "shrinking web." Undoubtedly the number of sites has grown enormous, but the content has shrunk down to the point where almost all of it is contained on a very small handful of massive sites, and those sites are increasingly walled and controlled. The idea that this would happen is practically unthinkable from a late 90s, early 2000s web mindset, where you could only imagine that there would be communities scattered wide across the web. Other than commerce/services (i.e. your doctor's portal, etc) types of sites, how many websites do you actually visit?

I find myself using DuckDuckGo and Bing more and more. DuckDuckGo lets me search in quotes (Google likes to ignore them). And it tends to give me what I'm looking for on the first page instead of ads, ads, ads.

Bing is good for image searches and seems less ad-infested than Google.

I'm maybe in the minority, but I still visit quite a few different sites. Mainly forums for specific interests (metal, opera, language learning) and news (ProPublica comes to mind). There's still good stuff out there. Just takes a little digging to find it sometimes.

            "once upon a time" -series

This worked fine on Google, but DDG still gave me an IMDB page about the show as the top result. The rest of the results weren't much better.

So I looked into their search operators and found this. It says that using - will give you less results about that thing. Not exclude it completely. That's a big shortcoming in my opinion.

Tons of videos that go on a ramble about something sort of close to what you want but not actually giving the information you want, and every time you try a new video it's more ads to watch.

I'm just exhausted of having to sit through intros that are totally unnecessary before people can just start talking about the thing I am watching the video for.

Especially annoying is when you get video results that are essentially people bragging or showing off that they figured out how to do something, but not explaining how they did it or anything in enough detail for you to learn.

To me the fascinating part has been watching the AI written content creep out to infest the rest of the web.

Used to be some news sites were clearly AI written, but that was about it. Then it started getting tendrils into hardware recommendations. Recently I've noticed one of my hobbies (fish keeping) is suddenly inundated with BS AI generated content about whatever fish I might be researching.

it's insanely frustrating. I miss quality results and articles at the top that were written by people with knowledge and a passion on the subject.

Makes me long for the old forum days. Used to be able to look up problem in a video game, for example, and you'd get links to helpful forum posts or maybe an ign article, or a random blog. Now it's all a million different seemingly auto generated sites and articles that are full of bullshit that doesn't actually help anybody, or isn't specific enough to help. Doesn't help that discord kind of replaced forums too, so now everything is tucked away in private servers. Interesting that as time has gone on it's starting to get harder to find good information on the internet, not easier.

That's literally what happened. The first 25+ results are AI-written articles that don't make any sense and never get to the point just to shove ads in your face. They do a really good job hiding that it was written by AI, too. They put an author name, author's profile photo, really current article date (fake), fake comments, and everything else they can do to fool you into reading to the end before you realize you read absolute gibberish and the advertisers got a chance to squeeze you for every penny they could. I use adblockers, but you know what I mean.

I am not sure if I would personally attribute all on even most of the blame on SEO. Google is obviously processing the query somehow behind the scenes, completely stripping specificity away. It feels like it just puts the query in a bucket based on other queries and ignores the intent because it knows best. Combined with (seemingly)ignoring operators(+, -, "") searching for anything not shopping/business/mainstream is at best frustrating unless you already know where the content is located in which case the results are ok. I also have no idea how personalization of the results would tie into it.

Personally I tried several different search engines over the years but none actually seem to simply return the results for the query.

I explicitly search for words and they just dont show up in the results. The algo seems to be more helpful with generic questions. Maybe Im not the target group anymore..

Full disclosure, I am a paying customer of Kagi also but have no other kind of investment, parasocially or monetarily in them - I feel like actually paying for a product means you're less likely to end up with something that turns against its users somewhere down the line, or at the very least the competitors are all free for the most part, so you can just vote with your wallet and walk away.

That being said - the results are slightly better, but I think the problem overall is that the good part of the internet is rapidly being dwarfed/dying to linkrot or lack of use. You can certainly filter out the bullshit very well with Kagi's tools but I wouldn't say it's night and day. Fundamentally the internet just feels less useful than it did ten years ago.

Yeah, same here paying customer and all that. I guess I am too young to have a good reference on search quality 10 years ago, but to me it feels like the signal to noise ratio back then was higher. In the present there's more signal (and info available overall), but a whole lot more noise.

For me the difference is the major difference is the huge amount of seo spam on Google. Maybe kagi results aren't "good", but they cut out a lot of the negative time wasting links that make searching a slog.

Just to give a small report, I have bought a Kagi subscription. I havent missed Google in a second. It does its job very well and I like that I can limit my searches to certain categories like Research and Programming. The programming category could include some more sites, but I'm very happy already.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion, it was really helpful! :)

I really feel this! I just recently started brewing kombucha for example, and went to check out of there was a subreddit for that. There is! They had a handy wiki with non cluttered, basic information, and tons of posts and comments from new people and more experienced alike so I could get a feel for what to look for and where to experiment. Sure I could just look up how to get started and use a recipe someone posted on a blog, but there's no comments or ways to verify misinformation or helpful tips from actual people.

Googling things and getting tons of reddit results really sucked, but I was usually able to leverage archive.org - but honestly, it already happened before - reddit threads and comments get deleted and still show up on google results, resulting in deadlinks from search results themselves.

It all reminds me a lot of the old web when websites would constantly break links, etc, and search results were constantly dead ends.

You and I seem to be on similar pages. I'm in NYC at the moment, but am relocating to the midwest-ish (what the hell is Oklahoma?) in about a month and am eager/apprehensive about what the queer scene there will be. I spent a decade in Chicago so I'm familiar with how tenuous the midwest's progressiveness can be.

I was counting on being able to rely on /r/Tulsa for at least some guidance, but I guess I'll do it the old fashioned way and just hit up the coffee shops once I'm there.

Good ole boys/rednecks pose a very legitimate threat in most of the midwest and south. They are absolutely dangerous to anyone that isn't also a straight, white, cis man that pisses them off. They are very often in law enforcement, too, that is NOT just a song lyric lol

Just avoid the churchgoing crowd. Sunday afternoons are a bad time to drive, eat out, and shop.

Most of the areas I've lived (midwest & south) have a nice, friendly handful of bars & hangouts, usually intersecting with a tattoo or art scene.

I've also found queer folks in the midwest gravitate to bookstores & thrift stores.

Tulsa seems like it could have a really cool community, I hope you like it there. What brings you out west, if i may ask?

As part of Epic's push into PC gaming, they bought the exclusive rights to sell particular games in exchange for a whole lot of money upfront, to the point that a lot of developers said that PC ports or even the games as a whole would not have been possible to make without that money up front. This rubbed a lot of Gamers the wrong way, because they were used to everything being available on Steam, and now they had to deal with buying games on different storefronts and being forced to purchase games from a publisher that they would rather not deal with (Or wait for the exclusivity deal to run out.)

On windows it might be different, but on linux, steam and itch.io are the only platforms that care about linux, and steam is the leader of the pack with proton. That. And I'm pretty sure they promised Linux compat and then didn't deliver. Nowadays, the only reason (iirc) I can't play Satisfactory on Linux is the Epic social integration, even on the steam version.

Also add in that many games were already on the Steam storefront and then yoinked to be put in Epic Games exclusively. Also their storefront were apparently broken and offering minimal features when they were pushing so aggressively.

UPlay and Origin are known quantities. I know they suck. Everyone agrees that EA and Ubi suck. There's no reason to complain about them, because it's widely agreed. Epic was new, and didn't make the situation any better.

Not sure if they've fixed their shit by now. TBH I haven't really had a look since they launched.

The pain points were that the games they were following were now on a storefront they wanted no part of, and were not available on the program that already had the rest of their library. The consolidation of storefronts wasn't that big a concern to people with that much buy-in to Steam already. There was already this client diaspora going on that people weren't the biggest fan of, Epic threw a lot of money around to make it work in their direction, people had a very visible target to unload on.

I refuse to use Epic because there were a large number of security/privacy issues when the platform launched... I haven't looked to see if any of that was addressed.

In addition, too many games I was looking forward to announced release dates everywhere, and then later sneakily turned that into Epic-exclusive periods and THEN wider release... I've not bought any of those games. The fault there's isn't on epic, since someone has to make the decision on the publisher/dev side... but I won't give them money.

In addition to other complaints about the paid exclusivity, the Epic client was also at one point caught snooping Steam user data, like friends lists and game ownership etc.

Epic responded and said it's purpose was mostly for their importing features, but anyway, I think most of the information on that is here.

There's also a bit of friction with Tim Sweeney's combative behaviour on social media, with a bit of a "where Steam goes left, we go right" development trajectory, (for example when Steam said Web3 / crypto games had no place on Steam, Tim tweeted to immediately welcome them) and also some concerns about significant investment from Tencent. The storefront / client itself is missing many consumer-friendly features (most commonly mentioned is a shopping cart, but I hear there's much more) and the general tone of Tim's comments on EGS's direction relative to the overall industry implies it's focus is to serve publishers' interests instead of consumers. In a time where the publisher-consumer relationship is more deteriorated today than it ever has been, that kind of positions a lot of gamers antagonistically towards Epic.

Personally, I agree with the general anti-Epic Games sentiment, but r/fuckepic was pretty toxic in execution, as you'd see a lot of threads where someone would detail a new problem they had with an Epic support trainwreck or something of that nature, and replies would carry a tone like "you got what you deserved for using EGS, fool" instead of "that's super unfortunate, thanks for sharing your experience, more to add to our warning sign." I would have preferred the subreddit act like the latter.

Yeah. The start of that sub was legitimately a 'can we have a place where we don't just get obliterated by downvotes for our valid criticisms.' It was incredibly bad around 2019 when Epic was really starting to spread into social media, and especially bad when they were using pre-made ad campaigns and blasting discussions with propaganda during their Epic v. Apple court stuff. So the sub started with good intentions, as it was a place in which grievances couldn't be touched.

It did, however, sour into a space where people mindlessly dumped their thoughts about Epic. It wasn't a place of genuine discussion, but instead a cesspool of arguing and whining.

I don't want a place like that here. I think that would undermine the entire feel of community this place clearly has attempted to curate for a long time, and as someone new to the community I would hate to be part of undermining it. But it was definitely a backbone that felt good to have when some were quick to dismiss and bury the genuine complaints with straw-man arguments about how it's just another launcher.

I kind of think the root of the issue is that r/fuckepic is a subreddit centered around a string of news items, and while there's a definite pattern in Epic fiascos, there's going to be times where there's not really a lot more to talk about as that news runs its course.

In a way, this is why I think being able to make any subreddit about anything, even extremely niche topics that are basically a news item instead of a categorical interest, actually leads to these sort-of-dead subreddits full of people who banded together over being mad at something that's old news now, causing the "old news, you should've known" hostile reply culture within.

I don't know exactly how granular groups or topics are meant to go on tildes, but I think something like r/fuckepic (in scope if not tone) couldn't become one. I think the tagging system limits extreme niches from becoming their own groups / topics permanently, which means when something's no longer a current news item, there doesn't remain a place to "force" conversation about an old topic needlessly.

I'm probably in the minority and this would have gotten me crucified on r/coys, but I would have rather seen Arsenal win the league than City because while I dislike Arsenal for sporting reasons, I morally detest City Group FC. While, yes, Arsenal did bottle it, they bottled it to a team that has what amounts to two first team squads because City have not been forced to abide by FFP like every other club.

The very active and knowledgeable Magic The Gathering communities. The amount of Reddit posts I trawl through for card and deck ideas is the single greatest source of Primo Jank and Hidden Gems in the entire mtg world.

As I’ve seen other comments mention that community feel of a niche passionate more hardcore fanbase is something that’ll be really hard to recreate on a forum like Tildes without a huge amount of growth so I’m still trying to work out how I want to approach those types of communities going forward and whether it can be actually be reddit free or not.

While I miss the gaming discussion, I've found the quality of current game discussion on reddit to be... not great. r/gaming is a pile, the moderation team on r/games is terrible (0% shocked they decided not to close up for the blackout), r/gamernews is not nearly as active... and the platform subs (and r/pcgaming or pcmr) are toxic to say the least. I find that r/nintendoswitch isn't quite as bad, but still.

The gaming subs I actually do miss are r/patientgamers since you get a nice mix of semi-recent discussion + retro talk and a lot of the people there seem to be a more dedicated crowd with more eclectic interests... and r/truegaming on occasion though the quality of posts varies wildly. And r/GameDeals, naturally. I'm glad that r/patientgamers created a Discord channel in light of everything going on recently.

I find the discussion of current announcements is usually pretty weak because in the end it's very little about people's interaction with a game and more about quick impressions/prejudices.

I wasn't so much talking about a game like that but you're not wrong, rather the reputation of a company. Bethesda just showed off Starfield and it looks great, but much of the conversation you see about it is "it'll be buggy because Bethesda so who cares i'm not playing it". If Hello Games made another title you might see the same response. And it'd be justified, but it gets tiresome to see that rather than discussion of the game at hand.

I personally wouldn't give Hello Games my money after NMS, but some people may feel differently and I'm not going to jump into a thread about No Man's Sky 2 to shit all over it because nobody needs to read that over and over again.

But No Man's Sky 2 is coming out in September, haven't you seen Bethesda's Starfield Direct? :D

I joke, but that's literally what I was yelling in a discord chat while watching the direct... it's like Beth looked at NMS, said "hold my controller" and did it... I want to say better, but I'm trying really hard to not give in to the hype.

I'm enjoying No Man's Sky in small doses (I usually do the expeditions or when new content happens). I have no issue with the game itself - the gameplay loop is a bit shallow for my brain and the generation/model variety of the planet stuff desperately needs a pass, but it's a fun game. The UI is rage inducing and is 100% the reason why I can only play in short doses.

Starfield promises (again, TRYING to dial back the hype...) to scratch that randomly generated exploration itch - go somewhere, scan/discover, get... points? Maybe gather materials, craft, maybe build a settlement... then do it again! Plus there's some actual enemies to fight. I'm really hopeful they'll give modders free reign again, because it means that as long as the bones of the game are good, we'll have a game to play for the next decade.

Edit: And if mods are a thing, combined with the random point-of-interest generation, it really makes me excited... we have so much stuff for Skyrim and FO4... can you imagine having Nick Valentine as a companion in Starfield? Or Lydia, because someone has to carry shit...

I think they're very different situations. The problem with No Man's Sky was that they literally lied about what the game contained. They had things in the trailer that weren't in the final game. They misled players about multiplayer content. They showed off shots that looked much better in-game than on PC and certainly on PS4, because the game was a mess at launch. It also had MASSIVE performance problems and in fact problems even running at all (I played it on PS4, and it hard crashed my PS4 three times which never happened before or since).

Bethesda has never had issues like that. I can't remember a single time where Bethesda flat out lied about their games. I think the "sweet little lies" meme about Todd Howard is funny, but it's also not really true. In some cases there's a little bit of overhype, and there's people reading too much into things -- or not being as impressed by things as Bethesda might have anticipated. For example, Fallout 4 having 40,000 lines of recorded dialogue -- well, it does. The problem is a lot of players didn't like that the player character spoke as well, didn't like the writing, etc. But that's not a lie.

I hated NMS when it came out, and revisiting it, I still find it really bland and boring. I even just wanted it for the exploration aspect but the problem is the exploration still seems sort of pointless and aimless and it's hard to even put your own goals in view rather than ones the game sets for you. Every single 'quest' is totally soulless.

I was super skeptical of Starfield, and I'm still skeptical because it isn't out yet, but what they showed in the gameplay deep dive was leagues better than anything I've ever seen from NMS personally, and I think it'll also appeal to a lot of people who found nothing to enjoy in NMS. It'll have bugs, I'm sure, but Bethesda has a reputation for bugs because they're usually incredibly silly visual bugs that get shared widely because of how popular the games are, not because they're usually gamebreaking problems. The last huge issues I recall were the PS3 ports of Oblivion and Fallout 3 which iirc had a lot of problems with loading as save files got really big.

I find the discussion of current announcements is usually pretty weak because in the end it's very little about people's interaction with a game and more about quick impressions/prejudices.

I do agree the quality of discussion is generally quite low for a lot of the big gaming subs, though there is something to be said for enjoying the general excitement around announcements even if it’s not articulated in a particularly compelling or insightful way. However, I do find Reddit super helpful for hearing about gaming news and announcements and so I have missed that during the blackout. I know for sure there are alternative sources, but Reddit just makes finding content so easy.

Yeah, I miss /r/Games a bit as a source of centralized gaming news (as I am not using reddit right now at all), but I've quickly adapted and just get my news from a mixed RSS feed from various pages. Works perfectly fine. Plus there's always Blue's News.

I think overall I totally overestimated how much I need reddit in my life. Despite spending so many hours a day on it.

But for me it’s the subreddits dedicated to the specific games and series I love that I mainly spend time in, the general ones I agree are pretty useless.

While maybe announcements don’t always yield high level discussion I just personally enjoy sharing in the excitement of a game a community’s been hoping for getting announced, also breaking down and speculating about all the little details/references in trailers or footage can be a fun way to build up to a release.

I am also desperately missing /r/CredibleDefense. I spent over a decade on reddit and for the last year it has undoubtedly been my #1 most frequently read subreddit. Ironically it's made me consider going to Twitter (which has committed the same sin), since a big portion of the posts were just links to Twitter posts. Would love to foster a similar community here or anywhere really, but as I'm just some amateur armchair general, I don't think I'm the best person for that role.

I know, I just don’t like it. I don’t really care what everyone in the site thinks about a specific topic, if I did I would look for hashtags on Twitter. I prefer the Reddit method of having separate sub communities, and letting them discuss the same topics independently from their own thoughts, views, experiences, and values.

I don’t like the Reddit model for advertising, power tripping mods that run amok, the way blocking someone prevents them from posting further down in the thread or even replying to your message in the first place, etc. the Reddit mechanics are so broken have lots of room for fixing (which they’ll never do), but I think the separate communities thing is something that works great and scales great as the site grows.

I actually feel the same way about most of the things you mentioned. My favorite thing about reddit was probably the weird little subreddits with their own languages/definitions and unique social norms. I'm honestly going to miss it a lot, and it's irritating to think about those spaces being inevitably ruined or abandoned.

I guess I'm just ready to try something new, mostly because any platform that was truly a "reddit equivalent" would probably fall flat for me, at least right now. It wouldn't be the same. With Tildes, I can appreciate a bit of a different format while still participating with somewhat familiar content. But I understand your perspective as well.

I was very fortunate with cigarettes. Over the course of a few months I started thinking "man, these things are actually f*kin gross." Bought my last pack in 2019, had two or three out of it and gave the rest away. Now I don't even like being near a person who has smoked recently. I can thank my business associate for always smoking inside the workspace making me extremely irritated with him and the smell of cigarettes, and Covid lockdowns for keeping me away from bars for two years lol. There was no decision to quit or failed attempts or anything, I just stopped liking them and now struggle to see how I ever did.

Maybe it will be the same for me and Reddit? We'll see. Reddit didn't make my clothes stinky at least.

I actually set up Feedly, and do like it's UI, but wasn't about to pay the subscription fee just to add more folders. Happy to pay something for things, but the subscription cost seems excessive to me for what it is/what they give you. So far I like Feeder.co (there's also just "Feeder" that I didn't like). It's not anywhere near as clean a UI as Feedly, but being able to separate feeds into a bunch of folders is a lot nicer for me.

I'll also second the question by @bugsmith about community. NSFW I think I've got covered, but hey, I wouldn't turn down options there, either :-)

Sort of like the Bing search of a few years ago. But I also only use it on an older computer that's for that purpose alone. Not sure if I trust some of the sites it searches.
Alohatube is actually also ok. It sometimes "hosts" stuff itself, which just means it plays it in its own Alohatube window and you don't get all the extraneous "stuff" that most nsfw sites like to throw up

My comment was mostly about surprise that this was the only subthread in this post that even mentioned missing NSFW subreddits.

Actual pornographic videos is one thing and I agree, it needs active moderation, ability to report abuse or illegal content, etc. But those mechanisms are something that has to exist anyway or else a community like this can not survive because governments will just shut it down or ISPs and hosting providers will just terminate service like they did with 8chan.

But there are many NSFW/sex topics which are relevant even to minors. Minors are allowed to talk about sex, they're allowed to ask questions about sex, in places with Romeo & Juliet laws it's legal for them to have sex, etc. And consenting adults should be able to have conversations about sex, relationships, and whatever else is going on in their life. Sure, moderate them to keep them useful and high quality but it should be allowed.

I had the opportunity to interview Mick a few years ago for an online mini course on societal impacts of UFOs. I knew nothing about the topic and didn't know how to approach it at first, but discovering Mick's work gave me a great deal of direction and made it enthralling.

I've been scanning the /r/Games frontpage every single day for I don't even know how long now. Well over a decade at this point. It was so convenient to get a mix of news and the better opinion articles that come out. The comment sections are usually pretty bad as a whole but had useful information often enough that I'd read the top voted comments every once in a while.

But it hasn't felt right for a while, at least a few years. I don't think I pay close enough attention to that side of it all to give specific criticism about their moderation, but it seems like all is not well on that front. (Does it really bother anyone else that they have a mod on the modlist named Whiteness88? What's going on there?) A lot of reddit feels like this. The vibes are bad. It's made me hate having this vague attachment to it.

It's way past time for me to leave and the blackout is as good an excuse as any. It's just hard. There's an emotional fondness for it simply out of familiarity and regularity, despite that it just wasn't a great place. I don't think I can get a balance of RSS feeds that will have most of what I care about and not leave important stuff out without it being a mess.

The whole situation makes me feel a weird emptiness.

Same here! It's been strange for the last couple of days not to have it as the default tab that I fall back on in my browser. I've returned to RSS feeds and Blue's News, which works pretty well so far, but I might check the sub every now and then for something I've missed (or when I want more curated news).

However, as you've noted, the "vibe" (which was never that great to begin with, IMO) has been in decline for the past few years - in many ways in parallel with Reddit and the internet at large. For a place for people who ostensibly enjoy games, there don't seem to be a lot of people who... enjoy games. So much excessive cynicism and negativity. Not that everything should be overly positive all the time (there is certainly plenty to be critical about in the games industry) but there could definitely be a healthier or more productive balance.

Hopefully we can help find that balance here on Tildes! I'll try to lurk less than I did on Reddit and post things when I have the time/energy, and I'd encourage others to do the same. Be the change you want to see and all that :)

    • r/magicthecirclejerking is the best Magic the Gathering community on the internet and I just miss them.

    • r/cars is my car news feed, and r/games is my games news feed. The former is down and I can't in good conscience browse the latter for shrugging at all this.

Otherwise... Eh. I migrated to reddit because it was a good replacement for text forums with some news feed capability on the side, but it's obvious the shitty disposable meme content is where they want to make money and screw users or subs over. Fuck em.

There's only so much of that I can take. I was hoping for a hell of a lot more balanced interests from a local set of Aussies, but it seems that culture just spilt out everywhere.

I feel better from not engaging there at all now, its back to only seeing Reddit for specific queries, hopefully using my libreddit instance ongoing.
Also, hit me up if you find some ways of being more engaged in local Aussie stuff, outside a local Facebook group (which is even more awful than most Reddit subs) I'm sorta out of ideas.

I am a long-time Redditor, 12 years total and 8 years on my current account. The sheer quantity of reposts was getting to me. The bots, the spam, the adverts, urgh! Any of the top content within a 48 hour period always seemed to have memes, images or X that had just been regurgitated from email chains that had been going around since the 90s.

That said, I miss a couple of the subs that were not so bot infested, along with truly not missing the cesspool of people that just went out of their way to antagonise.

Honestly, that isn't a good defense knowing what we know now in 2023. Social media sites and anyone who knows better has a duty to remove traffic, power, and interaction with such places as they only breed extremism and serve as recruiting platforms. They are specifically targeted by extremists as breeding and recruitment grounds, so even they know that the "anyone who can be swayed by over the top memes was gonna do that anyway" excuse isn't very valid. Deplatforming works.

That only works if the place actually encourages said ideologies or pushes for any form of actions.

Again, 99% of the time it’s a meme page. And the left has just as bad echo chambers.

No place on the internet is 100% perfect. The vast majority of pcm users were liberal and mocked the other two sectors regularly. The other side joked back. The argument that media leads to behavior has already been disproven a bunch just looking at studies of video games and film.

It’s not like it was a far right or far left circle jerk. It was mostly making fun of those people so it falls into the realm of satire. So, again, anyone being swayed by things they saw in pcm were probably going to believe that onion articles are real. You’re basically arguing the same thing as conservatives. “If the people are exposed to it—it’ll change them against what I want them to think!”

It was also one of the few places around that allows for freedom of discussion as long as people were respectful. As opposed to places like r/latestagecapitalism which banned people for even engaging with pages they didn’t like (pretty authoritarian if I say so myself).

PCM truly falls into the category of most people who dislike it only dislike it because they were told to dislike it.

But that’s just my opinion. I majored in political science. I frequented pcm. Never changed my ideologies more than any other open discussion would. I’d rather have that than an echo chamber that promotes hate in either direction.

                1. It’s media. It’s not a false equivalency.

                2. The argument is: the subreddit had nothing resembling anything close to political extremism nor did it promote any extreme ideologies. At no point did this happen. Therefore, any argument saying that extremist ideologies being allowed to fester and spread doesn’t apply.

In summary: the argument is moot.

Edit to add: I will agree that too much of exposure to a certain type of media may cause those susceptible to being easily swayed to fall victim to extremist ideology so my first point is flawed. It still ends when a satire page doesn’t promote any extremist ideology applicable to the original argument intended to be against it.

                  1. Video games, social media, TV, radio, print magazines, books are all forms of media. The way people interact with and contribute back to each form can be radically different and to pretend like all media is the same is not a justifiable argument imo.
                  2. I've done a good amount of redditing in my day and to say that PCM has no political extremism is not accurate, in the slightest. You might think that everyone is in on the joke so that it's not actually extremism, but it's highly unlikely that's not the case. The OG T_D denizens thought it was all a big joke too (or at least a bunch of them claimed), just as you're doing here.

Frat boy toxicity kind of thing.PCM had toxicity in the same way most of the subs surrounding politics had their extreme groups. However, I agree with your first point wholly and admit I was wrong there. I understand where you’re coming from.

Either way, I honestly don’t want to spend my time arguing on behalf of a subreddit. I, personally, enjoyed it and had way more good times than bad. I can live without it though. I shouldn’t have pushed it anyway. I got defensive.

Other subreddits I wouldn’t mind seeing revived would be trees, anthropology, animal crossing and hydrohomies, if it makes any difference.

It's not so much the blackout as it is my choice to leave reddit behind forever. And I've certainly made that choice and failed before, but I think it's for real this time?

But I'm genuinely going to miss /r/daddit and /r/parentsofmultiples. You wouldn't think parenting advice from redditors would be worthwhile, but both of them are pretty solid subreddits. I can't think of a better way to put this, but it was refreshing finding a parenting group that took what Mr. Rogers taught us growing up to heart and did their best to practice gentle parenting. To put it another way, there was a sense that collectively we wanted to raise our kids in such a way that they wouldn't be burdened with the high costs of therapy in their 20s like we were.

And /r/parentsofmultiples especially was really helpful in navigating the confusing world of having twins. Taught me what we needed doubles of, what we didn't. How to get deals of formula. How to handle sleep training twins. etc. etc. Just a good source of help for me for the last couple of years.

The one thing that keeps drawing me back are curated links + translations of foreign language content. Most directly, keeping up with the ongoing offensive in Ukraine is much easier on r/Ukrainianconflict or r/Russiaukrainewar2022 than trying to assemble the same from Twitter (which I'd also like to avoid) on my own.

I started to read Waybound and then realized I haven't reread the last 2 and was a bit hazy. So I'm in the middle of a quick reread starting with Wintersteel because I just love the character interactions and crescendo of that book so much (plus points!), and I'm almost through with Dreadgod. It's really fun paying attention to Eithan's perspective on this reread.

I remember joining r/iteration110cradle after reading the first book and being extremely curious about why they would ban turtle posts. I think that was around when Ghostwater came out?

I'm not sure either, I actually on found my first copy of Unsouled on a cruise ship last October, so 9 months before Waybound released. I suspect it has something to do with jokes about there being a turtle for every Path that Eithan offered Lindon.

I did my reread weeks ago and then finished Waybound about 12 hours after I first saw it released (a day before I thought it would...). I haven't read The Captain. I typically don't read unfinished series -- I thought Cradle was complete when I started it. At this point, I do know Will is very good about his writing schedule, and I might give it a read once book two comes out.

Did you read the spoiler scenes that Will put out after the kickstarter? Eithan's point of view in them (with spoilers) in the earlier books is great.

Finally… way done at the bottom.

I do feel that the golden age of NSFW content died with Tumblr, but alas, Reddit had its own legacy of pornography. A time before the Onlyfans shameless plugs and spamming r/all. Although I don’t see an issue with paying for sex work in general, I do feel like only fans has decreased the niche sub genre of fetish pornography, and with it came the new age of boring cookie cutter nudes and 12.99 exclusive content with low effort content creators, and I don’t just mean females, the gay and bi-sexual content (which I might add, I’ve dabbled into from time to time) is lacking in both quality and in fresh ideas.

To address the main subject, I’ve only been on Tildes for 20 minutes total, so I don’t know if there is a NSFW sub/s here, but it would be nice, provided it didn’t turn out like it always does, a cash grab for spammers and hucksters.

I used to refer to gonewild as organic porn because of the no cash incentive rule. Not that I begrudge sex workers their onlyfans income, more power to them, but it was nice to have a place where people just wanted to undress and didn't do so with a fake smile just to keep the lights running.

Tildes is very text centric, and while erotic content is allowed here at least according to the guidelines that alone won't make it very popular for sharing this stuff. Lemmy has a dedicated instance for NSFW, but as all things Lemmy it's very much in the finding its footing phase still. There's dedicated networks like fetlife, too, but they are more geared to finding people who share your interests IRL than sharing anonymously.

I like to be able to get into something and go to its subreddit to learn more about it and discuss it. I usually find out if there's a sub, and most of the time there is, then I go to the FAQ in the sidebar, get a bunch of information, and then I start to sort the sub by top posts of all time. Right now, /r/osugame and /r/StreetFighter, but in general, all the small subs for specific games or hobbies I used to go to.

I support the blackout, but I'm kind of worried. I was ready to quit reddit for good once the blackout started, and I still sort of want to do that, because the platform represents so many things I dislike. But there's never been anything like reddit when it comes to just entering the name of a thing and finding content about it, people talking about it.

Reddit has subs even for things like specific Minecraft mods, or characters in fighting games... I've caught myself looking to go to these subs several times in these two days already. Now enthusiasts of those things may lose their meeting point and never have one easily discoverable place for everyone to connect in again. It doesn't help that many communities might opt towards Discord for a community hangout with free hosting, and that bugs me in several ways. Maybe it's time to bring back fansites?

Also, even when this whole thing blows over, a lot of knowledge will be gone from search engines as a lot of subs may remain in blackout indefinitely, especially small, inactive subs that have little to lose. Even people outside of reddit have noted that search results everywhere have considerably worsened from reddit posts being unavailable.

I'm genuinely a bit scared about the consequences of all this.

/r/boardgames and /r/rpg are the two main ones for me. I care deeply about those interests; but not at all about D&D, MTG or Warhammer.
Pretty much everywhere I've looked for these rich and diverse topics the discussion is almost drowned out by posts about one of these megaliths, and none of the smaller (and in my opinion much, much more fascinating) alternatives get enough of an audience going.
    Yet, hopefully.

Reddit was really terrible in many way, among them the vast proliferation of drama-optimized low-effort subreddits. But the critical mass of users also enabled tiny and very focused niche communities to form.

I'm patiently watching how things are developing here especially with Deimos' plans of allowing groups to be more independent and multifaceted. At least give me ~gloomhaven please! :)

I have to be honest, I used to lurk /r/selfhosted, /r/homelab and similar a lot, but since joinig/becoming a member of the k8s@home discord/community I haven't needed to.
I have self-hosted for like 15 years and moved into running Kubernetes for my stack, nd the advice/knowledge of the community is superior to what I got on Reddit.

Reddit always had the 'look at my rack' with overkill, incredibly expensive power guzzlers, some not so great software recommendations/etc which required picking through. The obsession with linuxserver.io containers (which I've since found are really not that great and not as robust/secure as other methods of containerising), and the easy to spin up all-in-one solutions that have crypto miners built in!

I think the quality of information went downhill in the last 5 years - not saying it was BAD but getting harder to use.

You're definitely correct. LSIO is good for newcomers, I used them in my docker-compose days. I'd like to see self-hosting become more and more popular to drive FOSS and indie web agenda, so the easier we can make it the better.
My concerns usually go to their build, and over complexity with things like the docker-mod stuff, using S6 overlay, often rootfull. I had one (calibre) that did most of the apt install stuff post-docker launch, which made my startup time painfully long as for some reason apt usually runs at a handful of KB/s with default servers. I generally want as much of that as possible done in the container, not on launch.
You don't have to build your own, the k8s@home community have a lot of better practice ones build for a lot of apps which are pretty widely used in our community, I use a lot of onedr0p and bjw-s containers (and a few of my own/etc)

The only subreddits I really miss / haven't found good fediverse alternatives for are the more zoological animal science ones & the animal husbandry related ones. Not many casual fans of chicken genetics, sheep & pig herding & the latest data on animal training and behavioral enrichment on the fediverse yet. Or good husbandry advice/habitat design talk. Missing the entomology and flora ID / personal ecosystem management type stuff too. Some old school forums for these exist, and I still participate in 'em, but a lot of the ones that still exist lean a bit too far right for me to really enjoy.

The backyard chicken subreddit (for example) never went dark, but I won't be going back to reddit regardless of the personal loss of those hubs of niche but deeply held interests of mine. Alas.

My neighbor used to raise pigs for the fair. One of them came over to investigate when we were moving in, and he lured it back by hitting a metal pail. Oh yeah, pigs and chickens both are extremely food motivated, it's kinda funny! We have two pigs right now that someone just dumped in my yard about 9 years ago, and I got 'em to follow me into a pen by putting goat food (what I had at the time) in a bucket and just shaking it. Not sure if they'd been bucket trained by a previous owner before they were dumped or if they were just aware of the sound food makes, but it worked flawlessly.

When I used to free range chooks (as a kid, I've since moved and our predator load is much too high now, but I give 'em loads of run space), they were quite similar. They'd come to the glass door at my parent's house to beg for snacks, and were usually obliged. :P The guinea birds figured out which room was our bedroom and would stand on top of the fence to peck the glass if we slept in too late for 'em.

I was subscribed to like 90% niche and specific gaming subs.

I tend to avoid broader gaming subs (probably the broadest exceptions were r/JRPG, r/MMORPG (fair warning, extremely negative trend in that one), r/speedrun, r/emulation, stuff like that) in favor of game-specific subs like r/ffxiv, r/2007scape, r/dragonquest, r/deltarune, etc. In some cases where I'm very deep in a game's community, like in the case of ffxiv, I was in multiple subs related to the game, like r/ffxivdiscussion, r/talesfromdf, and r/shitpostxiv (heads up, all 3 trend too negative for even my own tastes, I'm just too involved in xiv not to look from time to time.)

Outside of gaming, there was a myriad of cat subs, and then a few other sort of random tech communities like r/homelab and r/datahoarder (neither of which I understood well, to be honest) or interesting movements like r/nolawns and r/fuckcars

Honestly speaking, though, y'all are gonna see me in ~games the most around here as someone divesting away from reddit, cause that's mostly what kind of content I was consuming, I just wonder how ~games will go for me as that's a pretty broad group and isn't what I'm used to.

I'm not 100% sure where they stand right now, I've never had a Tumblr account until this past month, but I do remember all the censorship drama from a few years ago. It looks like they've reversed some of their content rules — like, they decided to allow nudity as long as it's not sexually explicit.

Just from the little dip into Tumblr I've had in the past couple weeks I do really like the format, I feel like if it was still as popular as it was a few years ago it could be a good alternative to reddit for me.

I mostly don't miss it? I definitely was way too addicted to just opening up Sync for Reddit in idle moments and just scrolling. Deleting Sync made me realize that I wasn't really getting anything out of browsing Reddit so much. My hope is that I can re-purpose the time I used to spend idly on Reddit doing stuff that makes me happier.

The couple things I will miss are:

    • /r/manga
      • Was a great place to get introduced to new series that people are really into.
      • Was also the only place to have cohesive discussions about manhwa. /r/manhwa is basically filled with memes, unmarked spoilers in titles and images for chapters that just released, and "Recommend me series with OP Protagonists" posts. Moderation on /r/manhwa basically was non-existent, except for the random posts every couple months advertising a Discord server.
    • /r/rust
      • Great moderation; basically no blogspam, or very very beginner programming questions.
      • Rust is a (comparatively) young language, so many people who created/worked on/are working on the language regularly frequented it.
      • Lots of very high quality CLI tools are written in Rust, so it was a much more usable than /r/commandline to find posts that might improve my workflow.
      • https://lobste.rs has been filling in this void for me mostly, but it's also invite only and I don't know anyone on it.
    • /r/notjustbikes - One thing that has made me sad was /u/notjustbikes quitting Reddit because of the Reddit policy changes. They ran a YouTube channel where they highlighted topics on urban planning and urban experiences "from the Netherlands and beyond", and they cultivated a subreddit that was basically /r/fuckcars but without the toxicity and memes.

CombatFootage. A lot of other stuff I can get elsewhere more or less without much work. Staying up to date on new Ukraine war vids is a tough task without it. thedrive.com is, and has been, a nice place for car and defense news. That covers my broad overview. Perun on YouTube dives deep into it. But I’m left combing through countless twitter and telegram posts to catch the rest.

I know a lot of people won’t want to see that kind of stuff ever. I certainly know it probably won’t ever be here. The nice thing about CombatFootage though is it still hid the absolute worst of it. Now clicks can be a little riskier and I’ll spare anyone reading from the details.

Ive watched a bit of it on kaotic and Im very clueless about anything to do with combat, but Im surprised by the amount of footage taken from drones dropping a small ordinance on a single soldier in a trench. They obviously hover for awhile over their target observing and positioning before releasing, but it seems like a lot of technical challenges and machinery to try and kill a single soldier at a time. Is that kind of combat machinery new to this war?

I think reddit is at its best when it comes to Sports. Baseball and Soccer general subs are fantastic and tends to be a pretty healthy mix of memes, hot takes, and in depth discussion. the user flair demonstrating what each users favorite team is really lends context to the discussion threads and jokes too; and overall it's a whole part of Reddit that just seems untouched by the trolling, astroturfing, and narrative wars that the other big ticket general discussion realms can descend into.

I'm new to tildes so i don't know what the mission statement is, but I'd spend more time here is there was a subdivision for different sports discussion and a flair mechanic to identify who's repping which team in each comment thread.

Definitely the subs I frequented most like r/Android, r/Apple, r/Cars, r/Formula1, and more. The discussions in these subs were usually pretty good and it was where I'd learn about new tech, new cars, and get my motorsports news. I've just resorted to getting my news elsewhere in the meantime.

I think the biggest subs I miss are the ones that had a lot of useful information that would be surfaced with a Google search. Just yesterday, I wanted to fill a gap in my iPhone homescreen with a useful widget. I thought "no problem, let me just go on Google and search Reddit for some useful apps with widgets." However, as I searched and limited my search to r/Apple, r/iPhone, and r/iOS, I remembered that these subs are now private and will be for the foreseeable future. That's when it hit me that this blackout is going to suck more than I thought.

Honestly, I think the worst part is that I’m not.

I would open reddit and look for one of my subscribed subreddits to see if there’s something interesting. And I’d cycle ~5 subreddits and see if there was anything new.

Yesterday I opened my reddit client forgetting that the blackout was happening and paused the app to prevent myself from opening it.

Then, multiple times I would instinctively go to open it and realize that I turned it off.

Today I didn’t try, so I was proud of that, but it does feel like a void—like I don’t know why the phone is in my hand at any given moment.

I think the one thing I will miss are the niche news subreddits, like r/Android. The Android news sites are awful, so I never visit them.

It also helped filter Variety and Deadline with r/movies and r/television, since they write articles about everything (I don’t care if some random actor has signed on with a talent agency).

Overall though, I feel like it’s made it clear how much of a time-suck it was. I was checking it more out of habit, not interest.

    1. As you're probably aware if you browse gaming communities, they tend to be console oriented and hostile towards mobile games due to their monetization scheme. Which is understandable. But it was nice to have a place where I can talk a bit deeper than that instead of every comment dismissing the game as a mobile game (still lots of dismissal, but I don't feel like I'm stuck on step 1 in that community)
    2. the games tend to be based in Asia, so it can be hard finding news on them without searching religiously in every individual community. Or in some cases, at all. It's nice to have much of the news aggregated into one place so I can get a glimpse at what's coming out.
    3. For better or worse, some of the highest budget adult games tend to be mobile. So another aspect commonly dismissed that's at least a bit more freely talked about in that community, despite not being a community dedicated to adult games. Of course, this part may be irreconcilable next month even when the sub opens back up.

I can find replacements for most other communities, but r/gachagaming would definitely be one place that'd be difficult to replace when I leave reddit.

The battery life is pretty good, but the charging time is great imo. The over-ear cushions are replaceable, and that’s the only issue I’ve ever had with them, is the cushions tearing or wearing out.

I use mine mostly for audiobooks, but music sounds really good in them as well.

I missed being able to celebrate Denver's NBA Championship (note that the sub stayed up, I'm just trying not to engage with Reddit over the blackout), and the local subs (also stayed up). I think Feedly took care of most of the others that I'd normally browse, so their absence hasn't really had an impact.

It's confusing to me that people seem to think that the protesting is by mods and not the non-moderator end users of the 3rd party apps. Perhaps I'm in a minority that uses Reddit but prefers Apollo and old.reddit/RES. Tildes and Feedly are providing me with enough of an alternative to Reddit at the moment, but I don't know how to get the local sub content elsewhere, and I that's going to be the most missed aspect.

I'm particularly missing the TotD megathreads right now. Map was a pain, and kind of boring iceslide chain, only made exciting by virtue of being unable to even get silver (which is my goal for TotD map, not even gold!).

On the more consistent rotation: r/formula1, r/formuladank, r/dankchristianmemes, a bunch of board gaming stuff (mini printing/painting,etc), a smattering of gaming related stuff (really sad about r/Steamdeck Edit: apparently it's back?) a few different game specific ones and lately a bunch of ADHD subreddits.

Losing the really specific niche ones hurt the most. It was always a great feeling to find a new interest and see an entire community already existed. That being said, not being on reddit is probably a net positive.

I wasn't part of any particular community or involved with any sub specifically, so the only thing that I feel a loss for is, eh...

    if I'm gonna be honest...
the porn subs were what I find are hard to replace. Going to a dedicated porn site means videos with misleading titles, titles that contain all the keywords at once that may (or may not!) be somewhere in the video, terrible tagging/categorization, professionals playing at being amateur (of course reddit has a lot of that going on as well, but among the roleplaying, some are at least convincing)... and then there's the ads. I'd be fine paying for the hosting costs at minimum, but none of the sites seem to want cash in the mail (no matter how much shit judge+jury+executioner visa and paypal give them about withholding their sole source of income) and I'm not about to tie my real name to an account like that with all the data leaks going on nowadays.

Also because I would want to keep this separate from my accounts-to-use-by-day, I used a third party reddit app for this. Well... thanks spez

Not many people mention this, is that because people don't have easy throwaway accounts here or is it really just me?

Not a subreddit, but I'll miss communities that share short videos that I'd otherwise have to suffer through a TikTok or Twitter feed to find. Although a lot of that content may be low quality or posted by repost bots/karma-farming accounts, there would often be ones that really made me laugh and I was appreciative to Reddit for curating that. I've never fully gotten onboard with the short-form video format enough to commit to actually using a platform specifically for it, but it's nice to be able to share things every once in a while with my friends who send me... so many TikTok videos that I will never understand. It's been a good way to not feel completely left out, ha.

I spend a lot of my personal time watching classic TV shows like Seinfeld and in the absence of a social element, it just feels like time i'm throwing into a hole. I know it's not what tildes is for, and the posts were almost always just a screencap of an episode with 20-30 replies of people quoting the episode. But -- it's fun to bond with people over dumb shit. I'll miss those kinds of communities from Reddit.

I miss /r/TeslaMotors, /r/TeslaInvestorsClub, /r/spacex, and /r/hardware. They'd become the last few tech-related subs I followed, after the other tech subs got too large & started becoming really ignorant... but even they were getting worse over time due to tribal politics and the stock's movement drawing in day-traders and gamblers.

I definitely wish there were parallel subs for other topics, but honestly few other things attract the interest of geeks. What I liked about them was that they gave me a constant perspective of how applied technology was gradually changing the world we lived in + a sense of where the world will be in 5-10 years. Unlike, say, futurology, these predictions were generally somewhat grounded in reality rather than wishful nonsensical scifi, even if frequently missing the timeline by a decade or so.
