Currently playing an Archipelago multiworld server with some folks from the r/games discord server. Basically, we're all playing various games that are randomized and have all their items shuffled into a giant pool, then distributed randomly across all the games. I'm doing Donkey Kong Country 3, and by beating a level I looted the Surf HM to someone else playing Pokemon Red, for example.

It's great fun and a great way to play games asynchronously, and across all the ponds (since latency doesn't matter).

Easiest Archipelago suggestion of my life.

Archipelago is a multiworld randomizer that can be played asynchronously, and supports >30 different games. To put it simply: Player 1 can be playing Subnautica and scan an item, which instead of unlocking a blueprint it unlocks the "Battlecruiser" unit for Player 2 playing Starcraft 2. Player 2 beats a few campaign missions with the battlecruiser and unlocks the hookshot for Player 3 playing Ocarina of Time. Player 3 clears the Water Temple with the hookshot and unlocks a bunch of bonuses for Player 4 (playing Kingdom Hearts 2), Player 5 (playing Slay the Spire), plus a new armour set for Player 6 (playing Dark Souls 3). Goal is for everyone to beat their own game.

You can play either sync games (everyone is playing at the same time), or async games (everyone can log on and off whenever, and any items unlocked by others since your last session will just unlock for you as you log in next). A lot of games are supported - there's usually something for everyone. There's also no need to coordinate timezones or regions to respect latency - there's no reason you can't play with people on the other side of the world. So it's ideal for this sort of thing!

I went back to this recently after waiting a few patches, and it genuinely impresses me how consistent they are at improving things.

Now decision choices have two different sets of requirements for the two outcomes, so even if you really want Outcome A, you may only be able to forfil the requirements for Outcome B, and you really want to clear it ASAP.

The new modifiers on the world map are also great. I haven't seen any new biomes just yet though, I hope more of those come as for me they're by far the most defining part of the embark.

The foxes are great as well, and the rainwater changes + pump automation upgrade is an amazing solution to the 'new' blightrot system's problems.

This game was great when I first played it all that time ago, but the fact that they've constantly been able to single out issues and improve on them without making the game worse in other areas is fantastic. The only real complaint I have is that the prestige difficulty system is very weirldly paced right now, with some step-ups being trivial to handle and others being so impactful that they basically force you down specific choices and strategies (thinking of you, Prestige 5 building construction takes 50% more stuff).

Activision/Blizzard is the biggest truly independant third-party games publisher (the others being the console owners, Google and Apple, and Chinese giants Tencent and Netease). It had no issues in terms of revenue and really doesn't need this level of "insurance".

To put it another way: Acti/Bliz had enough revenue and resources that it could have theoretically entered the console market as the fourth major platform, and competed with the Playstation, Xbox, and Switch. I don't think it would work out at all, but the fact that that's even possible is insane.

Your argument absolutely makes sense for various other video game developers and publishers, especially if they are are just "one bad game" away from serious consequences. But Acti/Bliz was by far not at that stage, and absolutely could take major risks if they wanted to.
