Headphones that could block out things like music and voices

I fell head first into the Apple ecosystem last year and with that came the purchase of Airpods Pro 2. I believe using these has gotten me quite close to the ideal situation of blocking out unwanted music, advertisements, people talking etc. To clarify, this is the case when I am listening to music using the headphones.

This, sadly, comes with the heavy reliance on other Apple products for the ideal experience, and I am not able to comment on how they'd perform when using a non-Apple device.

Immediately after seeing the post, the first thing that came to my mind was the likely dystopian alternative we might see soon: cheap(er) smart glasses that insert ads to your view.

The idea of smart glasses blocking ads is an enticing one. I have already experienced something similar with active noise cancellation headphones. Not having to hear a single ad while shopping (or the endless barrage of Christmas songs during this time of the year) or in public transportation has been a welcome improvement to my life, and not having to see any ads either is the next step I want to experience.

If someone has other suggestions for good quality food storage containers that are readily available in Europe, feel free to reply.

    • A decent, cheap VPS from LowEndTalk forums
    • Lifetime Strongbox license (a keepass-compatible password manager for Apple operating systems)
    • Potentially a new chef's knife and some containers for food storage but nothing I am currently tracking is anywhere near deal territory

Black Friday week month gets less interesting each year but that comes with the benefit of not having to worry about saving my purchases for a specific time of year.

I can also recommend mxroute for anyone who is willing to spend the tiny bit of effort required to set everything up. After that it takes care of itself. Great spam filtering and IP reputation just to name a few neat things. I am also a huge fan of jarland's work and approach so buying the lifetime 10GB plan for $100 last year was a no brainer. I am expecting to get more than my money's worth out of it.

Have you tried any extensions on iOS? I tried installing the chrome version of Reddit Enhancement Suite but it doesn't appear to work.

Extension support for iOS is still very experimental and anything more complex is likely not going to work. I only really need my browser to block ads and trackers so I am more than content, but I understand someone wanting to achieve more on their mobile device.

You are correct about the development costs. Currently Kagi inc. (the company behind Kagi search and Orion browser) is self-funded, and, to my understanding, this means the CEO, Vladimir Prelovac, is paying for development costs out of his own pocket. The revenue model for the search engine is much simpler as there is a clear subscription model. However, making money/covering the development costs of a zero tracking/advertising browser is a lot trickier, and there have been discussions about how that goal will be accomplished.

I could see a combination of the following happening: (1) merch, (2) voluntary subscription with added perks, and (3) creating a product that is so much above the rest that satisfied users will want to keep it going and donate.

All that may sound quite outlandish to many as we have spent the past decades using internet where everything is paid for with user data, but that cannot be sustainable either. I admire Kagi's vision and I hope to see them succeed without having to compromise.

For iOS, there is one singular app that transformed my entire Apple ecosystem experience from just okay to excellent and that is Orion. Before discovering it, I hadn't been able to find a browser for iOS that felt good to use — mainly due to a lack of proper ad blocking which is an absolute necessity on the modern internet.

Orion features zero telemetry, adblocking out of the box, and overall a very enjoyable and sensible browsing experience. It is still in beta but I have browsed exclusively on it for the past 17 months with only minimal issues, which the development team has promptly addressed and fixed.

For me, it is incredibly rare to find music in great numbers that simply works. Discovered through sheer luck via Qobuz's weekly recommendations, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever has quickly become one of my favorite bands. There is something incredibly catchy in their music, not to mention the almost nostalgic feeling reminding me of the decades past. Every song is catchier than the previous one, and starting my days with their music while preparing breakfast has become a consistent event in my everyday life.

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - Sideways to New Italy (bandcamp)

I know very little about music theory, but even I can appreciate the complexities of the layers upon layers of guitars Rolling Blackouts C.F. uses. I have been looping their discography for a couple of months and I am still discovering something new in the familiar songs. If you enjoy the sound of jangly guitars and pure Australian brilliance, I cannot recommend this album (and the rest of their material as well) enough.
