    On Facebook people

    • post about life events ( just got a new car, closed on the house, got the new job, etc )
    • they post about thoughts they have had
    • post articles they were into

From any of those conversations start. AKA "staying in touch".

That would explain some of the behavior I saw from Adams. He absolutely lost is when H Clinton ran and he got the idea in his head that me might have to pay more taxes.

They are also incredibly fearful of loss, with even the most insignificant hit they take causing them outsized amounts of mental anguish.

The particular people I want to stay in touch with are on Facebook. I couldn't get them to migrate, assuming that I wanted to stay in touch through a phone app -- which I do not.

Whatsapp here has subsumed local facebook groups

That hasn't been the case here. There was one exception. A guy from a group I was in ( we have our own Google Groups email list ) insisted on posting event listings to WhatsApp, but he stopped because a lot of people in the group didn't have/want WhatsApp

Signal is used by tech workers and drug dealers.

I should probably get Signal then :-)

Your tech illiterate grandma might still be on Facebook

I've probably been in I.T. longer than some members of Tildes have been alive. I think I would qualify as tech literate. I know it is not what you meant, but your comment could be seen as rude and ageist.

Your local newspapers very likely have event listings for your community.

I've never really understood the argument that without FB it would be difficult to stay in communication with people

I have a number of relatives, friends and acquaintances who do not leave nearby. Fewer people these days do casual social phone calls - shoot the breeze. Those people ( and I ) can post to Facebook about things that happened, thoughts we had, etc -- staying in touch

He could have still put in the work with communication, relationship counseling, therapy etc to fix his problems with driving people away. He had the money to afford the best help.

living without Instagram, Facebook, and Threads (lol) is easy

I could live without Instagram. I use it mostly for scrolling through pictures when I have to wait somewhere.

    I never used Threads

Facebook would tough to give up. Lots of people who I want to stay in touch with who would be hard to stay in touch with without Facebook. Then there are all sorts of local event listings and local discussion groups.

Scott Adams is/was not the only one.

I've always wondered about rich white men who are filled with hate.

They can have anything they want.

If they are still unhappy they can afford the best of therapists or any other modality.

Given those things, why grip hard on a hate trip?

I feel bad writing this, because I really liked his stuff in the 90s. Sadly, he went right wing and red pill level misogynist about the time H Clinton ran for president. He became a very ugly person.

Temporarily. When most people go off of the drug all of the weight they lost will come back.

Ozempic has managed to caused the obesity rate in the US to decrease after just a few years

at worst they're back where they started after a relatively short attempt

The worst is that they end up with more excess fat than before. That is often the case with appetite suppressant and harsh calorie restriction.

I dunno, a lot of the mainstream coverage I see about regaining weight after cessation just has a bit of a "see, that's cheating,

Not the vibe I got nor the vibe I intended. My motivation in writing was to make a warning.

Long term weight loss involves behavioral and attitude changes. Given the cost of surgery & drugs, it begs the question of why not just straight to working on behavioral and attitude changes, perhaps using part of the money spent on drugs or surgery for really good support programs for changing behavior and attitude?

It is the same with gastric bypass surgery, appetite suppressants, or any other enforced significant calorie reduction. A few disciplined people escape that fate. It even happens to gastric bypass patients who get counseling before the surgery.

I don't mention it to be a party pooper, but it begs the question that if behavior and attitude changes are needed to make those things work why not just seek out very supportive programs for behavior change ( and spare your body & wallet those other modalities ) - like going to weight watchers support groups?
