this sounds like a problem you could solve by calling a democratic election between guaido and maduro as opposed to just recognising one of them on dubious grounds

What part of "And EVEN THEN, several of the EU countries, like Austria WAITED before backing Guaidó to give Maduro a chance to call for elections. He didn't." did you not understand? Several countries literally gave Maduro a chance to call for elections before recognizing either man as legitimate ruler. Since he didn't, but Guaidó is, they're backing Guaidó in the hopes that if he succeeds there will be democratic elections.

The election has been called fraudulent both internally and by the international community because Maduro used all sorts of undemocratic, dictatorial hackery to make sure the opposition didn't stand a chance. This is from your second link:

The electoral authorities banned the largest opposition political parties from taking part in the election, and key politicians were barred from running. Brutal repression of anti-government protests, and the arrests of many activists and leaders also weakened the opposition.

    ...

Electoral authorities also moved up the election to May, although it is traditionally held in December, allowing little time for the opposition to organize and campaign. They even eliminated the requirement that voters dip a finger in indelible ink, which is used to keep people from voting more than once.

For more info on the political disqualifications, have a wiki link.

Their recognition of Guaidó is not stupid. Guaidó was initially recognized by the OSA which is primarily LatAm countries. The Lima group, also LatAm countries, came out itself, independent of the OSA, backing Guaidó.. And all of this before the US joined in backing Guaidó. It wasn't until much later, and after deliberation, that the EU came out (mostly) in support of Guaidó. And EVEN THEN, several of the EU countries, like Austria WAITED before backing Guaidó to give Maduro a chance to call for elections. He didn't. So their recognition is anything but "kinda stupid."

Secondly, regarding calling for elections...that is exactly what Guaidó's aim is. He isn't declaring himself president, but rather interim or "caretaker" President while Maduro steps down / is removed and new elections are called. It's kind of hard to find the actual source for Guaidós plans because there's so much noise around this subject, but here's France effectively saying that Guaidó has the power to call for such elections.

Finally, it's disingenuous to say that Guaidó wasn't elected by anybody. He was elected to parliament by his constituents, and then parliament elected him to be president of that government body. Kind of analogous to, say, the Majority Leader in the House of representatives. Mind you, this is the same government body that Maduro tried to strip all power away from after he lost his majority in it. Furthermore, there is a legitimate claim for the president of parliament to assume this caretaker position as Maduro's past elections have been deemed as illegitimate by literally everybody who doesn't benefit from the narcostate.

Your comment is misrepresenting the information from your sources. For starters, it implied that Toshiba and Hitachi are out of the game completely when that is not necessarily the case (as there's still one plant that's continuing construction, and two of them are trying to get a green light but haven't been written off, as per your second article). And it's not that they "can't make the numbers work" it's that they can't get them to work with the government. Considering how the UK government is having a ball with Brexit, I'm willing to bet that they're not on top of their game when it comes to their nuclear energy policy.

Unfortunately, I can only bet, as the articles are scant on the details of the negotiations.

I did notice this little snippet:

The UK has 15 nuclear reactors, generating about 21% of its electricity

Which seems to cast some doubt on the implication that nuclear isn't a viable alternative from an economic perspective.

Technically, they're not telling you what to do with the data they send you. They're not forcing you to turn off your adblocker with the threat of legal action looming overhead or anything of the sort. They're saying that if you use an adblocker they'll refuse to serve you. Which makes perfect sense, they're allowing you to use their service at no cost to you and all they ask is that you listen to some ads. If you don't want to listen to ads, they're happy to sell you a premium, ad-free experience with higher quality audio and other neat perks.

I don't think people truly appreciate how hellish the music licensing landscape is, nor the fact that they've got really tough competition in the form of Apple Music (and amazon music and yt music et al), or the fact that even with subs they're still hemorrhaging money. So with all that in mind, I reckon Spotify's been pretty dang chill.

Now, I'm not saying I agree with this approach (I think a tiered sub approach would be nice to have for those who just want to get rid of ads), and I think it sets a lousy precedent for some of the more egregious actors to abuse, but those licensing fees need to be paid and the service needs to be able to put food on its employees tables.

(which, if I'm allowed to digress a bit, brings up an interesting philosophical question: people want things for free, but at the same time people want to be paid a living wage...so if you don't pay for spotify, and you won't let them make money through ads, how could spotify ever pay their employees a living wage? Something's got to give (in this case 90% or so of their profits come from subs, so as a sub holder: you're welcome). But that's neither here nor there.)

There are plenty of deals to be had on 1080ti's if you're willing to wait a bit.

Really? How good are the prices on those? Because a base 2080 will cost a lot cheaper right now, have about the same performance (perhaps a bit more with driver updates), and, while I agree RTX isn't something to focus on too hard right now, it still has it. So unless the 1080ti deals drop it below the 2080 by an appreciable amount, I think the RTX is still the way to go.

While I agree with you on the dev side (I'm really happy I'm no longer working in mobile dev, fuck that noise), let's recognize that is a whole different conversation than the one that's being had in this thread. The article slams Apple for basically allowing Google and Facebook to use its platform despite all the nefarious shit they may or may not be doing with your data, and for not policing them. The point I'm making is that this is on the consumer because if Apple pushes too hard to the point where FB/GOO apps disappear from the iOS ecosystem, the consumer will leave.

This is where I'm pinning the blame on the consumer for not valuing their privacy/data enough. I understand there's little the consumer and devs can do about external tracking, but likewise there's little Apple can do about that, as that is a problem on the tech/web landscape as a whole. Regardless, I believe that if consumers stand up and demand, with credible threat of boycott and abandonment, that these platforms change their policies in meaningful ways, this could not only change the way they treat directly-acquired data, but it may also impact the way external tracking works. Win-win.

Hopefully my answer makes sense (I'm procrastinating in the middle of a lousy workday).

Apple can't stand up to this because there's no credible competition with Google and Facebook/IG. Standing up to them would basically be suicide for the brand.

Apple is doing things, though, from giving talks about the issue, to standing up for your privacy where they can (e.g.: iOS doesn't spy on you - even if they allow, by necessity, apps that do). All of this is meant to raise awareness in the mind of the public.

Ultimately, however, the blame doesn't rest on these megabusinesses, but on the consumer. Don't get me wrong, the businesses should not be treating your data the way they do, but the consumer just doesn't give a shit. I'm talking about the consumer that doesn't mind if facebook is selling their info to ex-KGB Putin as long as they can go and post some anti-vax meme, or have some dramatic meltdown over an "it's complicated" status. The consumer that is blissfully unaware of why google is so good at selling things to them. The consumer that says "I've got nothing to hide." The consumer that shrugs when you tell them that their Android phone is spying on them (even if they don't use Chrome).

Ultimately it's the consumer that feeds the beast, and the consumer who must starve it.

My advice is go for stream quality and framerate, not pixel density. A clear stream at 720p with a consistent framerate is better than a mushy 1080p with constant drops. Heck, don't even be afraid of going lower res than that if necessary. Also, for fast paced games (e.g.: overwatch) framerate is life, so 720p @ 60fps > 1080p @ 30fps. For slower games (e.g.: stardew) the choice is up to you.

Also make sure you have a second monitor or some way to easily monitor chat, because viewer interaction is important to build a community.

Finally, consider bot integrations (like nightbot) and widgets (like streamlabs) that will add a little bit of flavor to your stream. The former is great for automated commands, like linking people to your social media, or for playing music in the background for games that benefit from that. The latter gives you access to cool interactions like follower / sub animations, chat display, among others.

ETA: feel free to link me to your stream and maybe I'll drop by with a couple of friends!

What would you have them do, though? FB is never going to change their business model because, well, it's their business model. Apple can't quite get rid of FB/IG without pissing users off and throwing them into the hands of Google's Android.

And Google is the best search engine there is, and is deeply ingrained into tech society. You don't "look things up" or "search" for things as much as you "google" them. I mean, the cheeky search site is called "Let Me Google That For You", not "Let Me Search..."

I think Apple finds itself in a catch-22, and all they can do right now is to continue to talk about Privacy in hopes of inspiring new attitudes in both developers and consumers.

I think there's a disconnect here between what targeted ads are and what people think they are. The author in the OP makes the same mistake, oddly enough. The way the targeting works is not directly aimed at you, individual #3190279, but rather at cohorts the system believes you might belong. So if the system believes that you are X gender, Y age and Z income bracket, it'll try to sell you ads targeted at those demographics. Sure, a lot of times those ads won't resonate with you, but advertising is cheap and you miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

Sometimes google will go the extra creepy mile and based on recent searches & volume it'll pitch you more tailored results (like cars, I like looking at cars and google knows this...it usually serves me ads for cars I'm not interested in, but they're still cars, and now I know who's desperate to increase sales), but more often than not it'll default to your cohort. If you're in the 25yo/relatively healthy cohort you're not likely to get ads for, say, mechanical ventilators. But if you fall into the "motherhood" cohort..........Target will be up on your shit...

Youtube's a different beast, though, where its video promotion algorithm is literally cancer. I'm not sure I've quite figured out yet how it works other than it's got to be really cheap to get your videos promoted (or trolls and their backers have very deep pockets).
