I originally got into knitting as a follow up to crocheting. Sometimes I'd find myself wanting to make knit things that crochet just wasn't a suitable technique for. I originally got into crocheting as something to keep my hands busy and make me feel productive while watching tv or listening to audiobooks.
Both of them I just learned via youtube. A few simple tools and a skein of yarn and you can be on your way with just trying. I occasionally posted little things to the knitting or crochet subreddits which resulted in feedback for things I might be doing wrong. Other than that, I just kept researching to find ways to do what I wanted to get done. Ravelry is a great site with patterns, forums, and a whole database of information (pattern difficulty, yardage, satisfaction, etc.) that makes it easy to find and filter whatever you want. Once I got good with the basics, I just kept expanding. It can be anywhere from mindless hand movements to actively thinking about each stitch.
