I really appreciate Dave's and other science communicators' efforts to shine light on the things and explain with evidence and principles the more nuanced stuff that has gone around.
I am amazed. I knew the things happening have been absurd and harmful to the general public but goddamn it's not looking good at all (Apart from the fact that people like Dave are fighting and refuting the bullshit claims). I'm not sure what I want to discuss here. Maybe this is more like a group therapy session. Or what do you think about it all?
I'm looking at this from far away country in Europe and while our situation here is better for now I've been really frustrated at times of various obvious and not so obvious misinformation that has been circulating even here in some circles. Some of it is leaking from US to here. Often it's these exact same dis- or misinformation claims and views that spread around in the social media here. Of course every country have their own local elements added to that in the information space. It's of course not as bad here and many know better but still some less educated lack the tools to properly identify it. I'm someone who has at least some background and education in scientific principles and have always been interested in that so I can at least disregard or refute some of it.
I think this linked video is one of the best along with the lab leak debunk in explaining a lot of what kind of straight up lying and disinformation has been generated and fed to public.
Dave vents his frustration when he is annoyed by the fact that the one thing humanity has long relied on — something that has brought well-being, understanding, and progress — seems to be under some bizarre skepticism. Especially when it’s disguised, its caricature is used as a tool for power or to pursue someone’s own interests, and that skepticism is fed to people damaging the scientific community and its potential to work properly, as we’ve seen lately. And that it has, and can have, very serious consequences. And it certainly seems intentional.
I can only wish all the best to everyone that are suffering from this and trying to fight the idiocracy.

There's at least a few that have been this significant last ten years or so I think. For fun I checked how big waves were measured and the Bothnian Sea buoy logged over 10m waves (significant wave height over 9), so there could be some twice that high waves. And the buoy location was not even very close towards the end of the wind corridor just North of Åland islands.

I agree, Tildes threads and conversation are nice to follow thanks to well behaving users. Productive communicating. Really like that around here.

Will the Jolla Phone work outside Europe, can I use it e.g. in the U.S.?
Yes, we will design the cellular band configuration to enable global travelling as much as possible, including e.g. roaming in the U.S. carrier networks.
Can I buy the Jolla Phone if I’m outside Europe, can I use it e.g. in the U.S.?
The initial sales markets are EU, UK, Switzerland and Norway. Entering other markets, such as the U.S. and Canada are to be decided due course based on potential interest from the areas.
We will design the cellular band configuration to enable potential future markets, including major U.S. carrier networks. There might be other options like someone sending one there.

It's good to have the android support dirt box behind a switch as well.

Thanks for dragging me again further down with that link to the earlier thread. :D No. I actually remember that thread, I lurked it or some of it at the time. I wasn't logged in so I missed bookmarking it which I'll do now so I can read through it properly. Thanks again because it's important to come across these kind of opinions and it can be thought of as a form of peer support.
I can say that some of the best times I've had is when you go for a multiple day hike in the wilderness and you can shut down all the electronics for once and just concentrate in the basics and nature. I think we all need that from time to time. Could be something else than hiking but that at least sets priorities in order nicely.

I know it's depressing. I couldn't put it in words as well as you did and while by doing so you doubled my depression regarding the survival among the goliaths thing I'm still ignorant enough and choose to remain cautiously optimistic about it.
It can't just be so that everything is forced down by our throats. Android is just linux based as well as far as I understand. But maybe it's not the point here.
Yeah, the performance will be less, I don't mind. The user experience on this OS is so much nicer than any other OS I've had to try or navigate through that it alone makes it worth for me (and less resource hungry I believe). The native apps are so nice whenever there is one available made by some heroes of the community.
I'm happy to rebel and support alternatives. Some people still use dumb phones and manage. I think it takes more people that don't walk where the rest of the herd is heading to even if it means some inconvenience.

Sailfish has android kind of sandboxed inside and most of the android apps I feel I need have worked, not all to be fair. Maybe because of the Android support as of now is older version or maybe because I'm not the most adept in making the most of it.
I'm more of a casual smartphone user and I don't mind minimalism in a sense so I don't really know or use the full linux potential of it or OTOH the missed features in the android sphere.
While writing this comment I installed discord on my phone and logged in. Everything looks like it should but I didn't test anything further.

Personally I've been aboard Jolla (a dinghy) / Sailfish OS for a decade and am happy to see this getting started and hoping it will work out well.Small Finnish company formed by ex Nokia employees. A rocky road (or rough seas) they've had but seems that they're still keeping a good course with what they have and still providing an alternative for us.
Would be interesting to know if there's anyone else here who knew about them beforehand.

At least in the chemistry side of it and coming with a relatively lightweight analytical chemistry background (so I don't really know anything) I think part of the problem with analysis techniques regarding food matrices is that they are reeally complex and obviously they vary a lot depending on what type of food product is looked at. One of the workarounds is the octanol-water partition coefficient for approximation of water and fat affinity of a compound. Again, not really valid for particle type of analysis.
Going further down in food matrix known chemical's analysis, I don't know if there is any standardized analysis methods of microplastics or plasticizer analysis from food products, probably there is but since the sample is quite complex there would probably have to be an internal standard compound that is somewhat similar to the target compound but differentiable from the target analytes and is added to the sample before any sample preparation is made and then the measured analytes are compared to this internal standard compound's measured value to give a relative response. This is very basic stuff and everything but adds to the complexity of it and is kind of laborious.

Very good and an important addition.
This capitalistic side symptom is one that crossed my mind yesterday but I forgot about it when writing.
And like the other commenter wrote it's good to remember the difference of the scientific method ("s") and the subsequent process ("S") which I wish could somehow be made more robust against wrongful implementation.
Also a thing to remember I think is that even if there was some disclosed funding or ties to some industry it doesn't automatically lead to corrupted science. But the examples of clear corruption have had a real detrimental effect on lives and reliability of science and probably on its image.
