There’s a couple surprising factors in what makes a person of color support Trump.

First, many of these people of color… pause for dramatic effect… actually don’t think of themselves as people of color. They think they are white and thus, not one of the people Trump is talking about when he’s being racist. This is especially so in the Republican Latino community. They believe that Trump/Republicans consider them white and that they are accepted as part of their racist community, and that they can all be happily racist together against all the other POCs whom they think of as non white. They believe this right up to and including the point where their families are being deported en masse by the very people they voted for. Sounds absolutely wild but this is genuinely what they believe. Look at Enrique Tarrio, literally the leader of the Proud Boys. He will never understand that Republicans consider him a useful idiot that they can utilize as a tool, not as a “fellow white” as he believes he is with all his heart and soul.

Disclaimer: these aren’t my own views of what “whiteness” and “non-whiteness” is, just what I have observed of Republicans.

For what it’s worth, I actually find Tildes is the most reasonable place on the internet to discuss this topic, and the only place I am not absolutely nauseated at the idea of clicking on the “view comments” of such posts. I have really only seen thoughtful and nuanced comments regarding the conflict here. It’s been a breath of fresh air. Admittedly I might be arriving late, after any possibly unhinged comments have already been deleted.

I’ve been really concerned at the level of divisiveness this topic causes. In the meatspace I have heard people who I thought were pretty reasonable saying some really unhinged stuff. Social media has been fucking awful with this topic. One friend told me that IG had decided to curate her feed with alternating photos of cute puppies/kittens with photos of beheaded people, dead kids or even videos of parents wailing over their dead children. This is literally the same technique that the CIA uses to brainwash people/drive people insane, utilizing dopamine hits to burn the images permanently into the brain. It’s fully not OK. Zuckerberg should be charged with multiple felonies for that, but nobody seems to be paying attention to that aspect of all of this - or if they are, they don’t have power to do anything about it.

    Booooo paywall.

Credit card points are absolutely worth it, but like others here have said, you must NEVER carry a balance. I use my credit card for everything, I have one with a $99 per year fee. I pay this off in full every month, no exceptions. Seriously, if you for even one second think you won’t be disciplined enough to pay it off in full every single time, then don’t even think about doing this.

That being said, it is awesome. For my $99 per year, I get at least $300 in airline tickets on a conservative year, free checked bags, free DashPass membership (although DD is so expensive even with the pass I try not to use it). I have gotten up to $800 in airline tickets on years where I planned my spend carefully.

Be sure to take into account your lifestyle. If you are struggling in life, can’t take PTO from work, etc, flight benefits are not going to be much use to you. You would benefit more from a card that gives extra rewards from grocery store purchases or gas. When I was younger and in that situation, that’s the card type I used the most (again, paying it off every single month, keep track of your spending so you don’t spend more than your paycheck. You REALLY don’t want to pay that 29.99% interest rate).

There are plenty of websites with guides on how to choose the best credit card to generate points for your lifestyle, ThePointsGuy and NerdWallet to name a few. Credit card points can be very rewarding if you have successfully matched the correct card type to your spending habits and, I can’t say this enough, pay off the balance in full every single time.
