Recommend summer anime
Behold, we have received a new season of anime. So, I thought it'd be nice to have a place where people can recommend what they're checking out.
For me, I think this is actually a pretty strong season, with lots of promising shows. As for what I've seen so far:
Hormiya: the Missing Pieces - this is basically a lot of the content that the original series cut out in its speedrun through the series. While I would have preferred that they'd just adapted it at a normal pace originally, I'm happy that they're revisiting this series to give it its due.
My Tiny Senpai - Fun to see this webcomic turned manga (that also has a sequel manga) get adapted. If you like fluff romcom slice of life, this is your jam.
The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses - This is an interesting one seeing adapted. I enjoy the manga well enough, but I do feel like it'd be more suited as a short than as a full length anime (5 or 10 minute episodes would very much fit the content better, drawing it out did make some moments a bit cringe). That said, they did some incredibly ambitious stuff with cgi in the first episode that made it incredibly interesting just from a visual perspective. If you're a manga reader, do brace yourself for the art style and character design shifts, as I found them more than a bit jarring. Another fluff romcom for you fans out there.
Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon - Oddly enough, I just started reading this light novel series a month ago with no knowledge it was getting an adaptation. I know any sane person's reaction would be that isekai has truly reached the bottom of the barrel, but this will surprise you with its quality, I guarantee it. The source material is a comedy isekai with truly interesting characters, and I think the first episode was a mostly well executed adaptation (LN adaptations tend to lose the main character's internal dialogue which I find important, but here it's included because it's very necessary).
Now, here's some recommendations of stuff I haven't seen yet, but am familiar with source material I'd rec:
The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen - Yes, I know I know, Villainess Otome isekai is the new overpowered mc isekai, a dime a dozen. But trust me, this is a good one. A stellar cast of characters, and yes, while it follows the tropes of the subgenre, I think the stories it tells are incredibly interesting. I started with reading the manga (cancelled due to artist poor health), and then jumped to the original LN, and I have to say this is a series that has just consistent quality across the board.
My Happy Marriage - While I've read a bit of the manga and own the LN's, I haven't read the LN's yet. However, if you like dramatic romances though, this one's for you. It's not quite a "I will fix her", type series, there's elements of that due to her past. But really both of our main characters need a lot of growing to do, and they'll do that together. Expect a slow and dramatic pace.
The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today - Like silly slice of life? This one's for you kids. The manga is a fantastic slice of life following an OL and her rescued cat who really rescued her. The cat's also like 6 feet tall and cooks.
Tenpuru - This is a manga series from the artist, not author, of Grand Blue Dreaming. However, it also has a very similar vibe in general if you enjoy that series, but even sillier if that's possible. I guy trying not to be a playboy like his family is, and flees to a Buddhist temple full of women. Expect absurdity, and yes, definitely a harem, whether he wants it or not.
Saint Cecilia & Pastor Lawrence - A slow paced slice of life with romance undertones. A lazy saint and the pastor that takes care of them, their budding romance, and the friends they make along the way.
Hyakushou Kizoku - this is an odd one to recommend, because I've only actually read a chapter or two of the manga. However, this is from an author you'd all know Hiromu Arakawa, known for such minor series as Full Metal Alchemist and Silver Spoon. This is an autobiographical series of her time growing up in Hokkaido on a farm (experiences that very much inspired and informed Silver Spoon).
Anyways, these are just some of my own thoughts on this season, I'd love to see yours.
I just finished Tomo-Chan is a girl.
It was a sweet/funny slice of life/romance
I'm not necessarily one to watch a lot of anime, nor do I generally follow seasons buuuuut...
I'm really looking forward to:
Jujutsu Kaisen S2.
First season was an animation treat and I'm hoping it's going to be the same (or better!). The story is decent enough to keep me interested so far even though it doesn't look too groundbreaking.
Rurouni Kenshin
has rebooted! It's one I've read the manga of when I was young so this is just a nostalgia trip that I'm looking forward to.
Worth noting that the author of Rurouni Kenshin was arrested for possesion of child pornography in 2017, so for anyone who plans on watching the show you should try to avoid doing so in a way that supports the author.
First time I'm hearing of that. Disappointing. Well more than disappointing.
That said, I agree with the principle.
Okay so originally I thought, well if the guy went to jail and he's paid his dues to society, why not give him a second chance to life etc.
Wikipedia. Hundred dvds. Paid fine worth about $1500 USD and he's a free man again?????!?!?
That's so completely gross I don't think I can even revisit the old story, let alone new.
Undead Girl Murder Farce is the only show that's aired so far that I've been interested in this season. Very dialogue heavy first episode, but in a good way, the direction is very Monogatari-esque. The characters and overall presentation are interesting.
Also watched the first episode of Ayaka but it didn't really grab me. I'll probably watch one or two more episodes of it but I expect I'll end up dropping it.
I do plan to eventually watch the extra Horimiya stuff but I want to wait until it's all out so I can rewatch the base show with the extra stuff interlaced in.
As for stuff that hasn't started yet, there isn't really anything I'm particularly interested in, a few things I'll probably give a shot but nothing I'm actively excited for. Looking to be a pretty light season for me.
I second the recommendation for Undead Girl Murder Farce, it had a very enjoyable first episode and for me was definitely the most intriguing out of the episodes I've watched of this season.
Also for those interested I want to point out that it has Hatakeyama directing, who was also in charge of Kaguya-sama and the beautiful Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. It's nice to see his creative storyboarding and directorial quirks (like the moody kagenashi shots) on full display in the episode, I hope we'll see a lot more of it!
One week was gone, so some summarize of which the first episodes of new animes I liked. I watched almost all animes. Order is mostly chronic.
Ryza no Atelier: Tokoyami no Joou to Himitsu no Kakurega
Basically almost the first anime of the season. Thicc thigh, not bad animation, standard enter story etc. I don't have many hope on this but while I enjoy I continue to watch.
Yumemiru Danshi wa Genjitsushugisha
A boy suddenly became self-awareness, and stoped simping. On other hand we have a girl which is like a tsundere. Again, no big hope.
Undead Girl Murder Farce
Fine set up. We have here a semi-oni, an immortal girl with 14-old body but 900+ old, with only head which search her body, and a maid with a gun.
AI no Idenshi
Sci-fi by Madhouse! Not a good drawing, especially the baby which sometimes appears [openning included] and backgrounds. But the story is good for me. You have humanoids, a nurse, a girlfriend as maid etc.
Dekiru Neko wa Kyou mo Yuuutsu
Kinda iyashikei, reversed Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san: main heroine, a full black cat which can do anything except speak [only tsk-tsk]. Plus some parodies on cats are here. But goddam, why exactly Go Hands is one who making it? I guess, [for example] Doga Koba would be better for comfy anime. Because those flexing with camera and some other stuff made me headache.
Other new animes from this weekend:
Zom 100: Zombie ni Naru made ni Shitai 100 no Koto
Well, the name say about itself all, anime about a our world with zombies. Not so a popular genre in anime, yeah? But I want to note about other thing: the anime [at least the first episode] has the best animation in this season. Yeah, you read correctly: better then Mushoku Tensei or Jujutsu Kaisen. To addition, the first episode focused on theme about a black company which is Japanese term for an exploitative sweatshop-type employment system.
Just in case, I watch some «old» animes too, they've been already mentioned here above: Mushoku Tensei and Jujutsu Kaisen. I can note that the latter has something a differ animation from the previous works which I prefer more. But the animation still is fine, and I know that some people prefer this one new.
I don't watch or couldn't recommend from my view but I can them note:
Liar Liar
Kinda a game royal battle with future elements. The anime has some light vibes of Classroom of the Elite and NGNL.
Dark Gathering
Horror shōnen.
Zom 100 had a fantastic first episode. Did such a a great job building towards the zombie reveal
FYI about Jujutsu Kaisen it starts with 5 episode side story, takes a month break (well not really, but it just does recap episodes only) and then the real season 2 starts.
I'm really enjoying Ooku on Netflix! It's an alternate history wherein Japan's male population is decimated by a plague in the 1600s, so gender roles are reversed, and only wealthy women can afford to have a husband. But only the highest ranking official of the country, the shogun, has a whole harem of men-- the "Ooku"-- who exclusively serve her. I thought it might be too heavy or serious, but it's not. It has heartwarming and humorous moments too. I've watched one episode so far and it surprised me, in a good way.
It's basic, but I'm hyped for more Bleach Thousand Year Blood War. The first 13 episodes we got were awesome, Pierrot has really kicked up the animation quality. I'm also enjoying more of the world building that was absent for most the Arrancar arc, plus more history on some of our biggest characters.
heavenly delusion is the best show i've seen for a longest period
