I watched Angel's Egg because I heard it was an aesthetic inspiration for Hollow Knight. If you've played it, it's a lot of fun to trace the relations between the two works. But of course, Angel's Egg is also just an awesome experience that stands on its own as well.

Angel's Egg is special. Hard to forget a lot of the imagery. I was inspired to watch by this review on Anime Herald (which contains some major spoilers):...

Angel's Egg is special. Hard to forget a lot of the imagery. I was inspired to watch by this review on Anime Herald (which contains some major spoilers): https://www.animeherald.com/2022/09/03/the-opaque-masterpiece-angels-egg/

Wherein the reviewer relates the dreamlike neverending night setting of Angel's Egg to his own protracted episode with a complicated childbirth, in and out of hospitals and driving late nights.

Depending on mental state, the film could easily trigger some unwanted contemplation about the future. The two opposing worldviews represented by the girl and the man are something we all live with as time marches forward.

The two worldviews To me, the girl represents hope of rebirth and reconstruction after the end of the world. We see the aftermath of a destroyed planet, almost certainly by human warfare. She represents how if we started over, we'll be surrounded by the lessons of the past and can rebuild slowly, create new meaning for ourselves and be wary of past mistakes.

The man represents a nihilistic view, that if humans were to come back, that would be the worst thing. He's on a mission to prevent that. Humans ruined everything and they will only do so again, and again, forever. He's there to stop the cycle and allow nature a different path forward. Optimistic that it will be better without humans to interfere.
