MAPPA studio has become well known for their breathtaking high quality animation sequences. But quality animation comes at a cost.

The writers contrast MAPPA with Kyoto Animation, who are also known for their superb animation, but also apparently have much saner workplace conditions:

KyoAni is famous within the industry for fostering talent through their animation school and keeping that talent by engaging in healthy long-term plans that produce high-quality animation at a pace that doesn't suck the life out of their staff. They are near completion of the latest Sound! Euphonium series nearly half a year before it starts to air.

This particular quote hit me: I felt the same way about Spiderverse 2: people suffered to make this. Would I sit down for a meal where I can see the staff being screamed at, where they're crying...

    This particular quote hit me:

I feel complicit for liking anime, knowing people suffer to make it.

I felt the same way about Spiderverse 2: people suffered to make this.

Would I sit down for a meal where I can see the staff being screamed at, where they're crying and slipping me notes about how they haven't seen their new born son ? Of course not.

But would I sit and eat if I don't see or hear them? .....

I don't need anime. Mangaka get paid okay-ish and I always have theatre of mind. it's good to hear about KyoAni though, and hopefully it succeeds and the healthy culture can spread.

If folks can at least hold off on tweeting raves about MAPPA, and not giving them money directly (I know folks have ways to watch current season anime....), even if it's just for a season, maybe they'll take it as a sign of needing improvement.
