Coincidentally I was showing my teen Samurai Champloo yesterday. I can't believe it's been 20 years but it's still just fantastic. I might have to pre-watch a bit because I don't remember how bad the violence gets ...... Ditto Cowboy Bebop. I've shared one episode and it's just great storytelling, and great music. But Ill pay a bit more attention to framing, next time I watch an episode of either classic anime.
I would definitely rewatch yourself first. I love the show, but last time I showed it to someone we had several instances of "goddamn man, this is dark, why did you show this to me". Also, want to...

Also, want to bring up Zankyou no Terror, or Terror in Tokyo. While it has its bad parts, and I don't think it sticks the landing, I love it and put it up there with his other more popular works.
I still remember the episode where Sara the blind assassin who plays the shamisen, because the bad men are supposedly holding her child hostage....what a sad story. So maybe just a few episodes...

So maybe just a few episodes like when they wandered into marijuana fields lol
One of my favorite episodes in Champloo is up there in sadness--the one with the cutpurse/pickpocket who was voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch in the dub. Spoilers just in case anyone hasn't seen...

So many little things made it impactful, be it he and Fuu's growing bond, his stupid mistake that at the same time is totally understandable, and the helplessness Fuu felt when trying to visit his mother afterwards. Using 'Mystline' as the song for that scene took it to a whole other level, but yeah. Champloo brings some tearjerkers with it, even if they're more somber/stoic ones like Jin and the woman forced into prostitution. God I could go on about this series for ages. It might be my favorite Watanabe production, even above Bebop.
Oof, yes I remember that episode. And Jin's. They're.....not ugly though, not at least in an aggressive way..... I mean, the entire series is about Guy's quest, which is also quite tinged with...

But it never feels exploitative or as shock effect: it really is trying to describe the full range of human experience, made understandable across time and culture.
