What's your anime of the season? | Summer 2026 (June - Sept)

Another season of anime has (mostly) ended. Inspired by @Flashfall 's excellent seasonal review in an earlier weekly threads, I thought it'd be interesting to hear about everyone's overall experiences.

So, what's the best anime you've watched over the last 3 months? Doesn't have to be one released this season, as long as you've recently watched them. Seeing how the old and new compare to each other could also be interesting.

You can mention which other ones you've also watched so others know what the comparison was. It's also okay if you've only seen one since the fact you liked it enough to highlight is still noteworthy.

    My favorite anime of this season has been Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You. Its a well written romance/slice of life anime. I think both of the two leads have interesting nuanced...

    Its a well written romance/slice of life anime. I think both of the two leads have interesting nuanced personalities, and have good chemistry and banter. It avoids a lot of the common tropes that tend to make anime feel weird.

    The side characters that start to get introduced later on are good too, it feels like a nice cozy cast.

    The anime holds to the manga pretty much shot for shot in most cases, but I think the voice acting elevates a lot of the scenes. I like the subtlety that both voice actors bring to their characters in the dub.

    I am mostly drawn toward anime with interesting art or animation. In that vein, there were many highlights:

    • If you like lost of fighting with fluid animation, check out False memory.
    • If you're in the mood for some nostalgic retro aesthetics, there's The ghost in the shell for sci-fi and Goodbye Lara for romance.
    • There's also Sparks of tomorrow for some quirky surreal dream sequences.

    Among them, the one I enjoyed most is Jaadugar: A witch's life in Mongolia. Its children picture book asthetics helps convey the mindset of the main character, accentuate the importance of mysticism in the setting, give the historical story an appropriate folklore feel, and contrast the serious subject matter for great narrative effect (imo). It doesn't look like a typical anime. Importantly, the story made a strongest impact on me and managed to change the way I think about things (which I've talked about at length in an earlier thread).

    Honorable mention is Yani neko, for its heartfelt story and wonderful OP.
