But that felt like asking for troubles, and many people already said they want to move on from this whole business so :/

Part of why the conflicts on here were so intractible is for the most part people on all sides meant well. In online discussions there are certain topics that are like black holes which draw people in the moment they see it mentioned, which they otherwise wouldn't have much strong opinions on. In these cases it's best to reduce the chance for them to have to come across it to begin with. Good group separations is one way to achieve that, user blocking is also another way but from a different angle.
Of course there would still be people deliberately seeking out opposing groups to argue, but this is closer to malicious behavior. A side benefit is troublemakers are more easily detectable and so more easily handled with moderation.

If not then wouldn't us asking for invites be going against his wishes? And if he still does, then I think some clarification regarding the reason for the policy change would be great to alleviate concerns.

Growth to the point where there are meaningful separation between the different subgroups within the community so that people are not accidentally drawn into seeing topics that cater to another subgroup and be compelled to interact with people with irreconcilable differences. At some level we need to accept that these kinds of social issues are much larger than us, we probably cannot meaningfully "solve" it (in the sense of not having them flaired up again), but only find ways to mitigate and make it more tolerable.
People sometimes say they still tolerate being on Reddit despite the general toxicity because there're some smaller subreddits that they still enjoy being in. I think there was hint of that kind of stickiness starting to form here as well. Before TaylorSwiftsPickles left, she didn't just say she'd leave, but that she'd leave once the Minecraft season ended. The Minecraft threads was basically a Tildes' subgroup in all but name. Probably truer to the nature of a subgroup too since the activities and conversation there actually feel different from the larger site, as opposed to the many formal groups that all feel more or less the same.

I could understand if the plan is just to wait till the storm passes or till there being new LLM-specific filters or something. But not only that, now users are not given new invite codes either. How to interpret that as other than closing the tap?

I recall Bauke said they and talklittle already done a lot of work contributing to the codebase on missing features, just waiting for Deimos to push. We could think about what new features are needed or not later but that feels like a natural first step.
Deimos has been excellent as a moderator, I genuinely mean it. I would prefer to keep contributing if it will help us achieve a better place, so it's unfortunate that he seems to have hit his limit. If anything by continue staying here we're giving him more burden than needed.

Eternal September was an often repeated lession among old-school online community users. But nowadays most people more or less settled into the major platforms. The drama with Reddit and Twitter basically revealed that once they're big enough, they no longer have to worry about users leaving. If a smaller site were to grow in the current time, it needs to make active effort in being attractive and not just wait and see. This is something we could do better.

If we want this community to survive I think a deliberate attempt to make a successor is necessary. The initial seeding of a userbase is the hard part of any new community sites. Like you said, letting there be multiple attempts by different peolle would just splinter this existing one and kill both sides faster. But not doing anything means this existing group will just gradually dissipate away, especially since there doesn't seem to be a plan for having new members either.
If most of us could move together to a successor then we could maintain the existing culture and relationships we formed here, with the added benefits that any needed features (some the current admin already plan to implement but just not have the time, user blocking is one of them iirc) can finally be implemented.
He could even be a regular member on this new site too! So it's not like we're abandoning anyone.

Just maybe not growth for its own sake but growing while still somehow maintaining quality. That's probably not something the creator has control over though, you can ban people for doing things but cannot force people to do things.
You could put the links in your bio as middle ground, and tell people to check there if they ask.
