RoboTech: greatest robot anime or are there others?

I do enjoy some Gundam Wing, but are there other shows in a similar vein to RoboTech?

I could just steal from this giant mecha recommendation thread on /r/anime but will only pull a few from there that I personally enjoyed:

    • The Vision of Escaflowne — a fantasy giant robot series that has them sword-fighting and wearing cool capes.
    • Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket — a side story to the original Gundam series but stands by itself; a civilian boy in a neutral colony befriends a mecha pilot.
    • Macross Plus — a short OVA about two competing pilots of prototype mecha. Also has some fantastic music and a lot of the same crew that later worked on Cowboy Bebop.

That sounds like The Flight of Dragons:

so he cultivates his hobby into something he can use to improve the mecha of this new fantasy world. Its a pretty dumb show all things considered, but for someone who really enjoys mecha its a pretty fun ride.

That sounds like The Flight of Dragons:

Requiring a leader, Carolinus consults the magical force of Antiquity, which directs him to look 1,000 years into the future to find a man of science descended from a legendary hero. In late 20th century Boston, Carolinus locates Peter Dickinson, a former scientist turned board game designer who is obsessed with dragons. Carolinus brings Peter back through time and enlists him in the quest.

Robotech is Macross combined with a spin-off and Macross II (in spite of the name, Macross II is more of a spin-off itself since it is non-cannon). If you liked it, you might want to check out...

If you liked it, you might want to check out Macross 7, Macross Frontier, and Macross Delta. Those are series set in the same universe and made by the original creators.

Alternatively, look up Shoji Kawamori on Wikipedia. He is the mechanical designer and director for most of Macross. He has also been involved in many other series, and I think most of them are pretty good. Genesis of Aquarion is like a crazy psychedelic version of Macross, so you might like that one in particular.

I like the rough sketch of the characters, but I don't like how the characters come across. I like the concept of Aquarion and the way it's attacks work, but I don't like the art style. And IMHO it needs more gay.

Aquarion Evol is a little better in every way, but somehow I wasn't able to finish it.

Just watched the trailer for Genesis of Aquarion, looks good But then...Aquarion Evol looks a bit better. I get what you mean though; sometimes the world is interesting and the story is not so...

I get what you mean though; sometimes the world is interesting and the story is not so good or the characters are poorly developed; it's happened when reading some Marvel and DC comics, decent worlds but then shit execution.

Darling in the Franxx is more giant robot than real robot, but is hugely entertaining.

Robotech is actually three separate series Macekred into one:

    • Super Dimension Fortress Macross
    • Genesis Climber Mospeada
    • Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross

Likewise, classic Voltron is another portmanteau Macekre:

    • Beast King Go-Lion
    • Armored Fleet Dairugger XV
