This week in Anime: week 46 of 2018

Unfortunately I haven't had time to sit down and keep up with the weekly episodes this week, as I caught a bad case of addiction to a new video game.

How do?

Since we're currently lacking native spoiler tags, I'd ask all of you to follow this scheme:
Post a top level comment with the title and episode number of the anime you want to talk about like this
**JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Vento Aureo - Episode 1**
Then reply to those top level comments with your thoughts. This way people who haven't seen something yet or plan on binge watching once all the episodes are out can simply collapase the top level comment to not get spoiled ^.^

What do?

Simply post, discuss or joke about any currently airing anime you want. For Anime you've been watching that aren't currently airing refer to Cleb's weekly thread.

When do?

But what if the anime I want to talk about hasn't aired yet?

No problem, just post a comment here once the episode has aired, these threads aren't meant to last one single day.

Well that was an episode all right. Real glad I'm following this show as it airs. The pacing so far is great. Just hope I never run into manga spoilers.

After your suggestion last week -- I gave the show a try and I'm pretty up to date as of this week. I'd say it's pretty solid and somewhat unpredictable, but some of the stuff from the first episode was a bit over the top, imo.

That said, as a show, it feels like there was almost no exposition on the world around them, the way that miracles are learned, the relationship between some characters, what the adventurers guild does, etc. that I'm waiting to learn more about, but it might not come given that we're 7/12 episodes in already.

Good to have you on board! I think they skipped the exposition since it's mostly building off the generic D&D fantasy background that most people know by now. I like that they skip those parts and save explanations for later or never. Keeps us guessing as to what the rules of the game are. They hint enough about what's going on in the world to keep us interested but remain focused on the main story thread.

Guess I'm of the school of thought saying the storyteller should choose which details are important and which to leave out, and it's better to throw out a lot in order to achieve a tight and coherent story.

Good point. That brings to mind the trash fire that is Seven Deadly Sins which I severely regret watching the entire first season of (damn you nonsensical MyAnimeList ratings). The author clearly just pulls plot "twists" and new attack skills out of his ass constantly, with no foreshadowing or telegraphing of any of it. So yes, taken to the extreme, leaving out plot details leads to an uninspired chaotic mess.

But so far Goblin Slayer is doing fine IMO. Episode 8 will be critical for deciding if that trend continues (unless it's one of those flashback-after-cliffhanger episodes).

Whew boy, I am glad I dodged that Seven Deadly Sins bullet. People only having access to anime on Netflix can really bias those MAL ratings sometimes :p

Offtopic meta: Current season is considered fall 2018, not winter. Winter would be TV season beginning January. I'm retagging the past few topics accordingly.

So we get a time jump in Underworld, 2 years forward, where Kirito and Eugeo have been in a Swordsman Academy in Zakkaria.

While we've had a couple hints to Kiritos OPness in a couple previous episodes, this episode really began to push towards it. Kirito's been in an Academy for 2 years training to be a swordsman but his trainer tells him that she knows he's holding back. He hasn't beaten her because he can't. He's hiding his sword skills from the others and I imagine that when he really unleashes, we're going to see Aincrad Kirito again.

After the rollercoaster that Jojo Diamond was, I just can't get excited about Vento Aureo. The exposition of the characters seems rushed and clichèd, without enough time for me to get emotionally invested. It'll probably get better, of course, but, for now, It's a shame.
