I'm really not a fan of BL since Bara started to grow as a genre. I have heard that many women don't like watching straight porn because they find it exploitative. That's the same thing I get from a lot of the BL I have read. The characters don't act like real men act.

I know what I said earlier sounds like I'm dismissing the genre altogether, but there is some BL that I actually like. I really liked Junjo Romantica in spite of it's more problematic elements. And to be fair the sidestories were all much more realistic.

This kind of genre (and I am including yuri / shojo-ai as well) seems to work much better when the relationship is kept non-sexual. To give you a better idea of what I mean, I also enjoyed Maria Watches Over Us, even though I don't feel any attraction to women. When you focus on thoughts and feelings you end up creating human-like characters. When you are focused on sex you end up creating a characature of what you think people will find sexy. Sex should come about because of the consequences of the characters thoughts and actions, and not because they happen to be in a manga of whatever genre.
