What have you been watching / reading this week? (Anime/Manga)
What have you been watching and reading this week? You don't need to give us a whole essay if you don't want to, but please write something! Feel free to talk about something you saw that was cool, something that was bad, ask for recommendations, or anything else you can think of.
If you want to, feel free to find the thing you're talking about and link to its pages on Anilist, MAL, or any other database you use!
I've been keeping up with Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken. It's a really fun and inspiring show and I really think more people should give it a try. As a bonus, it's got an amazing OP.
I've also been giving Dorohedoro a shot, but it's been a struggle to get through with the jarring cg character animations (though the background art has been amazing), but the story and world have kept me interested. I think I'll give it another episode before deciding if I'll continue to watch it.
What I am liking very much:
Eizouken ni wa Te o Dasuna! — it is about anime making with interesting draw style (sometimes it looks like Shōjo Shūmatsu Ryokō) and insertions like: https://streamable.com/tef2w
Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun — it is also with interesting draw style about yokais and kinda mystics, here is also funny banters between the boy and the girl.
Somali to Mori no Kamisama — it's kinda Mandalorian but in anime with some differences.
Just fine for my mood:
Dorohedoro — something of utopia that I can not understand but I like.
Nekopara — well, catgirls is kinda holy things.
Koi Suru Asteroid — slice-of-slice by Dogo Koba with elements about astronomy and geology.
Kyokou Suiri — a light version of Monogatari.
Runway de Waratte — it's about modeling and clothes making for them in kinda shōnen style I guess.
Rikei ga Koi ni Ochita no de Shoumei Shite Mita — comedy romance with scientific elements.
Another section:
Odd week for me, decided to drop The Qwaser of Stigmata of course so I didn't have that to watch. But also considering if I should keep watching Baka and Test. The characters in that show are just so terrible to me that I'm wondering about continuing. Than the true odd ball Katanagatari, the show I like but have trouble convincing myself to watch for whatever reason. Got some thinking to do about those two I think about continuing to watch them.
Dance in the Vampire Bund Ep 3:
This show is growing on me the more I watch. I really didn’t like the first episode and the second was a bit improved. But this episode is really marking it as a show I think I’m going to keep watching and actually enjoying. I don’t think it will ever reach AOTS territory for me but will be good enough that I don’t hate my time with it.
Also, the more I watch the more I notice the Shaft stylings popping up a bit more. I’m starting to notice their characteristic camera angles and lighting more than I did in the first episode. Though the coloring still doesn’t impress me and still reminds me of those fake hdr filters from the era, everything just has this tint on it I don’t really like.
Sound of the Sky Ep 3:
Don’t have as much to say for this episode compared to the last. While it still brings up more questions that I want answered. But compared to the previous this was a much calmer and relaxing episode even with the events that happened. Overall though it was a nice episode with some good character building.
Omamori Himari Ep 3:
This might be the most pointless of the shows I’ve decided to watch for this 2010 Winter Season. And of all of them the most generic harem anime possible to make, and at the current moment somehow tied with Baka and Test for my least favorite that I’m still watching. Both have a large cast of generic females that feel a little trope each, but none of them really have a personality or reason to exist. Meanwhile the Main Character is utterly uninteresting and bland, just doing whatever is necessary to somehow gain more girls for thee unending harem. Omamori has the extra issue that I don’t see where any of this is going, I haven’t seen what the point is of the harem or this whole demon slayer plot point.
Also once again in traditional fashion the girl I like the best, the childhood friend, is obviously going the lose in the end and will just make me feel really sad and glad that things seem to be changing for the poor childhood friend character.
Baka and Test - Summon the Beasts Ep 3:
With episode 3 now, I think I know what my major issue is with this show. The characters, specifically the main character. But the others aren’t much better ether. But all the characters are such idiots that I just can’t enjoy watching them. That and they all feel rather generic, they fill the roles necessary but don’t do anything more or change things up. And with this show with how little plot there is, I feel like the characters have to carry it fully and I don’t know if they can do that for me. I might keep watching, or I might drop it in a couple more episodes. I’ll see.
Katanagatari Ep 3:
This show is in an odd spot for me, I like the show and the characters, but I have no drive to watch the next episode. I’m finding myself kinda forcing myself to watch the next episode at the last minute each week and loving the show but never wanting to watch it for some reason. And I don’t know why I feel this way at all, it should be a sure thing I want to watch it but for some reason I just don’t. I don’t know the answer to this issue to be honest, I don’t know if I should keep watching it or not. IDK, maybe I need to think on it a bit more.
Manga: Dragon Ball 1-13 (no Z).
Anime: Vinland Saga
I finally binged Neon Genesis Evangelion. I wasn’t prepared for the amount of panty shots and towel accidents and holy hell, people weren’t kidding about the last two episodes being weird! I guess I see it as a pop culture lesson. It certainly was a weird ride!
