That looks like a high school art student painting, sophomore maybe.
Oh god, they signed it in permanent marker. Good on him from saving the previous "restorer" by hiding the name.
What the heck... they overpainted the shoulders by a good quarter of an inch, turning her into a linebacker.
The face! The real painting isn't wearing half a pound of foundation, has shadows, and depth. Whodathunkit!
Re-canvassing and the painting barely looks like it needs restoration in the first place (at least from afar).

Well, that was easy at least.

LOL yeah he doesn't ever really do clickbait, so the thumbnail and title on this one definitely caught my attention. The failed "restoration" is not quite as horrific as that infamous Jesus fresco, but it's still pretty bad, and took all the life out of the painting. But thankfully, even though the previous person used oil paints, they hadn't fully cured yet, so Baumgartner was able to remove it and properly restore the painting.

Finished now and yeah, that was a really easy (for him) restoration. The painting itself isn't amazing, but what was done to it was a tragedy. The fact that it was part of a pair was an interesting twist as I surely wouldn't want to hang her heavy handed amateurish looks next to his much more original painting even pre-Baumgartner.

I suspect the husband didn't want to pay the original artist as much for his wife's portrait as he did for his own, since you can tell hers is obviously much more quickly painted than his. And as a result, I wonder if at some point an owner of both paintings asked an artist friend of theirs to try to make the wife look as good as the husband. So the whole mess might not necessarily be entirely the fault of an "overzealous" "restorer". Regardless, them signing the damn thing in permanent marker is pretty unforgivable though, so I'm glad Baumgartner was able to remove that. And kudos for him keeping the name blurred out too, since I'm sure the temptation to out them was probably pretty high given how serious he takes the ethical aspects of his job, which signing something in permanent marker is a massive violation of.

I couldn't get over the fact that she seems to be missing an ear. Her hair and clothing don't seem to cover where it should be and it throws off the shape of her face.

I normally like his stuff, but I'm not going to engage with anything that has a thumbnail like that. I know people use them because they work, and I'd like to do my part to minimize that...

I'm pretty sure the thumbnail and title are mostly meant as a bit of a meta-joke. I very much doubt he will make his face a regular part of his thumbnails going forwards, regardless of how popular...

I very much doubt he will make his face a regular part of his thumbnails going forwards, regardless of how popular this video gets. But whatevs, you do you. You're missing out though, as this was a fun/interesting one, IMO.
