I'm not sure if I really like this, I just saw some Van Gogh originals the other day at the Kröller-Müller museum. I don't mean to make people upset but Pokémon is at its heart commercialism, designed to sell toys, trading cards and other merch. You might have cried as a kid watching the Pokémon movies or something but there is a shallowness to it.
I also don't think putting some impressionist paintbrush filter over things makes something Van Gogh.
I understand the argument that this helps kids and others engage with and appreciate art works, but if you need a Pokémon theme to visit an art museum probably you aren't going to become a regular patron because of a Pokémon exhibit.
I don't even deny there is an art to pokemon, I think a solo pokemon exhibition with concept art, original anime cels, pixel art, etc would be really cool, but why mix in Van Gogh.
Van Gogh was an extremely talented but equally distressed man who eventually shot himself. Maybe there is a way the museum can do this fusion right but I have my skepticism about it.

I'm inclined to agree. At first glance I thought this was an interesting idea, but the more I looked at the pictures which you can see online the more uncomfortable I felt. Van Gogh's work is some of the greatest art of the 20th century, and I honestly don't think it needs adding to in this way to get people to appreciate it.
I recently went to see a "Van Gogh experience" not far from where I live, and took my daughter and several nieces. There was well chosen classical music playing, with Van Gogh's art being projected onto all of the walls and subtly animated. Samples of his diaries and letters were shown in between the changing slides of his art, and it was a wonderful experience. Getting to see not only his art, but to catch a glimpse of the inner world of the man behind the paintings. It was a moving experience, and one that I won't forget in a hurry. Importantly, there was not a Pokemon in sight, and all of the small people loved it. My sister made a point to visit Amsterdam and the Van Gogh Museum later in the year, off the back of how much her children enjoyed getting to look at some of his art. My own daughter has been more passionate about art since experiencing it, and has taken to keeping a sketchbook with her wherever she goes. It didn't need Pokemon or Bluey or Paw Patrol or Dora the Explorer or anything else mashing into the scenery to let these children appreciate the beauty and the sadness of Van Gogh's work.
All that said, I hope that if this manages to draw Pokemon fans who are unfamiliar with Van Gogh's work into the museum that they stay for long enough to see the other art there, and hopefully to discover a love for his work all on its own.
I heard about this recently. It is super cool but it did seem a bit random as hell to me lol. Hopefully there will be a way for people like myself to obtain some of these without having to travel...

These are neat and the connection may not be the most obvious but I think it makes sense!
The Van Gogh Museum and Pokemon have teamed up in honor of the museum’s 50th anniversary in a collaboration aimed at introducing new audiences to the work of Vincent van Gogh. From today until January 7th, Van Gogh Museum visitors can see Pikachu, Eevee, Snorlax, and other Pokemon worked into paintings of the famous Dutch artist.
Mathieu Galante, director of licensing at The Pokemon Company International, said "There is a strong link between the inspiration behind Pokemon and the inspiration behind some of Vincent Van Gogh’s most famous works. With this collaboration, we really hope that we can see children discovering and immersing themselves into the world of art through the incredible works of Van Gogh and Pokemon.”
The paintings in the exhibit include Pickachu as Vincent van Gogh in his Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat (1887), Snorlax and Munchlax worked into The Bedroom (1888), and Sunflora among the Sunflowers (1889). There are six paintings made by artists of The Pokemon Company inspired by Van Gogh’s work for this exhibition.
According to the Van Gogh Museum, there is a lot of cross-over between Vincent van Gogh and Pokemon. Van Gogh greatly admired Japanese prints, using their flat planes of strong colors, everyday subjects, and attention to detail in nature as inspiration for his own work. And these prints served as inspiration for a lot of Pokemon art.
Van Gogh Museum director Emilie Gordenker is excited about the exhibition. “This collaboration will allow the next generation to get to know Vincent Van Gogh’s art and life story in a refreshing way,” he said.
