Read Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. It's in the vein of The Martian, with some action stuff and a try at fleshing out the lead as more than a hypercapable scientist. It doesn't really do a good job of building a character in my opinion, because it treats emotional beats like yet another survival obstacle or science problem to work around, instead of internal struggle complementing the external and stuff like that. Couldn't put it down though, so it was good in that respect.
