    Most interested to see that I hadn’t heard of any of the top books, and have only heard of (but never read) one of the authors - Brandon Sanderson. And I’ve only heard of him because of reddit

      Edit, I guess the point I was trying to make is that the books have to be both good and less controversial than others. Many brilliant authors also have readers who hate their work.

        Logically you can parse why you might not have heard of the highest rated, but it’s still surprising at first glance.

        I suspect JK Rowling would have been first in the uk if her opinions had been kept to herself. I think a lot of her low star reviews are from people judging the author rather than the work. Goodreads is still a decent source for this kind of list, I think, but there may be other cases like this which slightly skew the result.

    Having just 1 book for India is like having 1 book representing Europe. Almost every unique language in India has its own literature.

      That is a very fair criticism. It is far from a perfect analysis. As @agnesnutter wrote, it was done by an amateur.
