They've published a ton of amazing speculative short fiction I love and are definitely worth checking out. Highlights include:

At the beginning of August I subscribed to Clarkesworld in a hope to broaden my reading horizons a bit (although I've been busy reading other things so I haven't yet read the August issue). I was debating between it and Lightspeed, but decided on Clarkesworld as I felt more drawn toward sci-fi than the fantasy/sci-fi mix and the general chatter online felt more postive towards Clarkesworld.
But with the price of free, trying out Lightspeed is a no-brainer! So now I have 2 (soon to be 4 I suppose) magazine issues in the reading backlog!

I basically only read short stories these days and have subscribed to Lightspeed some years ago, but it was one of those I had to cut because I had too many subscriptions. However definitely worth it giving a try again.
If anyone is like me and prefer to get some inspiration for what stories to read from reviews, I can recommend looking at sfrevu.com and tangentonline.com for coverage of the various science fiction and fantasy magazines. Or if I may shamelessly self-plug, my own shortsfreviews.com (which only covers random individual stories and not whole issues).
If you enjoy reading short stories, please consider supporting them by subscribing, even though the stories are also published for free on their website. The changes to how Amazon has handled magazine subscriptions, by trying to force everyone onto Kindle Unlimited, has really hurt a lot of these magazines hard. Neil Clarke has written more about that.
You get the magazine in a proper ebook format, and you support the payment of the writers and editors. I think for Lightspeed, you also get to read the stories before they go online.

I think I'm confused. If the stories are not locked behind subscription fees, does subscribing "unlock" anything? How do they operate/pay writers?

Awesome, thank you!
Site seems to be down at the moment, but I appreciate the heads up. Posting to remind myself to check again tomorrow.
