Palin filmed in North Korea for 15 days. His book on the experience is coming out soon, though he's postponed his book tour because of heart valve surgery. Here's another more detailed article...

Here's another more detailed article from the celebrated Daily Mail.

Anyone who hasn't seen Michael Palin's travel documentaries should really consider making the time to watch them (and read the companion books), IMO. They really are fantastic, eye opening, and how Palin interacts with the world and the people he encounters is wonderful.

p.s. Two of my other favorites travel docs that I highly recommend everyone check out, which also have similar concepts to Palin's Around the World/Full Circle and Pole to Pole (but done on motorcycles), is Obi-Wan Kenobi's Ewan McGregor's ;) Long Way Round and Long Way Down.

"There was this feeling that it hadn’t been this monster," he said. "It had been very serene and peaceful. Pyongyang is a wonderful city; it's very quiet, there's no traffic or advertising. I'd love to go back."

I find it hard to believe that Palin is so naive that he doesn't realise what is going on in the background. Of course Pyongyang is going to be peaceful and serene to visitors. Meanwhile in the background, citizens are getting treated inhumanely.

i feel like categorizing that as a "naive" statement presumes that he firstly isn't aware of what's happening, which is something of a stretch since it's not exactly a secret that north korea commits extensive human rights abuses, sometimes even against visitors, and secondly isn't simply commenting on how much it owns to have a metropolitan city but without the problems that metropolitan living causes such as noise pollution or regular pollution or traffic or the annoyances of everyday life such as the constant and inescapable advertising done by corporations. frankly, i would kill for a city in the west which was not dominated by those things, irrespective of the fact that in north korea they're products of a regime which commits grave abuses against its people and is putting on theater for the west in doing so.
