I completely missed the release of the sequel to War of the Spark. After a day of research, I conclude that they fucked everything up. If you like drama, we have queer characters becoming straight, a romantic subplot uncereminously dragged behind the next dumpster and shanked, lorebreaking plot points and overall, terrible writing. Oh, also character motivations just don't matter anymore.
Wizards of the Coast never seemed to have good quality control on their novels, but they seemed to be doing fairly great with their short stories with Zendikar, Kaladesh and my personal favourite, Ixalan, which actually finally gave some character development.
This entire fiasco has lead to public apologies from WotC in particular due to the retconning of a bi characters sexuality to straight, cause that got the most people angry. It's in all honesty just the tip of the iceberg, and I would expect better from a company like WotC, especially since they seem to care enough to publish novels but not enough to make them good.
They stated it outright. Basically said all past feelings were platonic (literally the words platonic love were used) and how in the past she only was in the brawny dudes. EDIT: @Death here's the...

I suspect this is coming from higher up; Hasbro. Hasbro has prevented any sort of non-straight relationships in quite a few of their products, even having a studio retroactively edit out a VA from...

I just found out that WotC's apology and promise to do better was blocked internally from countries like Russia, China, Singapore and the Philippines. This was definitely a financial decision made...

This was definitely a financial decision made by suits.

How does one retcon a bisexual character back to being straight short of them just stating it outright? How did they bungle it that badly?
They stated it outright. Basically said all past feelings were platonic (literally the words platonic love were used) and how in the past she only was in the brawny dudes.
EDIT: @Death here's the section in question: https://twitter.com/CubeApril/status/1194305407164076033
That's... really bad. Who signed off on that, why even do that unless the writer has specific hangups about a woman loving other women?
The writer denied being responsible, and stated that WotC blocked him from getting them together.
That's kind of messed up on WotC's part.

Suits at Hasbro I bet.
