Alma Linux has decided to target ABI compatibility with RHEL instead of being tied down to being a 1:1 clone.
Major changes including basing off CentOS Stream (as desired by RHEL) while keeping compatibility as close as possible, including their own bugfixes or additional software as requested instead of waiting for Red Hat to accept them, contributing back to the EL upstream (read: Stream) as a goal.
Additionally, they also guarantee the 10 year support even though Stream theoretically is limited to 5.

Overall, I see this as a big win for all parties involved currently:

    • Red Hat gets another team working alongside them on the Enterprise Linux ecosystem as they desired.
    • Alma Linux can act more proactively towards their community's demands and can stand out on their own.
    • The community gets a community Enterprise Linux spin with longer support than CentOS Stream.
    • Rocky Linux and Alma Linux are no longer the same thing.
