    As much as I want this to happen, Microsoft and Apple are nowhere to be seen in this announcement. Webm was supposed to be the universal video codec, but since Apple doesn't support it (which means it doesn't work on iPhone, at least not embedded), h.264 gets used instead.

      Microsoft may not have been mentioned in Mozilla's announcement, but if you go to the Alliance for Open Media's home site Edge is on there :) No word about Apple though. If enough of other products support it, they'll have to add support eventually.

        Safari still only supports h.264 out of the box. They have shown no signs of changing any time soon.

    From what I understand, one of the big reasons to use h.264 is because so many devices have dedicated decoding hardware which makes it very efficient and battery-friendly. If this is the case then...

    From what I understand, one of the big reasons to use h.264 is because so many devices have dedicated decoding hardware which makes it very efficient and battery-friendly.

    Hardware companies may start embedding AV1 technology into processors and graphics cards in 2020, enabling broader decoding of AV1 video files in a wide variety of devices.

    If this is the case then I certainly have some hope for this format.

    Without support from apple it won't happen. They didn't support webm so probably won't support AV1... guess we will have to keep using x264
