I owned a System 76 Serval laptop back in 2008 until around 2016; It wasn't really anything to write home about (other than price/performance being above average), but I never had any issues with it either. It was pretty solidly built, not thinkpad ruggedized levels, but better than most other consumer grade desktop replacements I have owned.

The only real problem I had was similar to the author of this article, in that the order was delayed for a few weeks before they shipped it out to me. The customer support was fantastic though and reached out to me immediately after I made the purchase to let me know that would be the case and ask if I wanted a refund, but to also inform me the reason for the additional delay was because they were in the process of upgrading the internals for the model... I was in no rush so was fine waiting and ultimately received a more powerful laptop than I had expected, at no extra cost to me other than a bit of time.

So if you're looking for a Linux based laptop, (or "open hardware" desktop now as well, it seems) I would definitely recommend at least considering them.

For what it's worth, I had that issue with several orders from Lenovo for Thinkpads. I had a few orders take about a month to get to me. They really need to work on their supply chain. It should not take a month to manufacture a laptop and ship it somewhere. I didn't receive any contact from their customer service about it, either. This was apparently normal. IMO that's unacceptable for a business-class machine, something I was going to use to pay my bills.

My x260 started zapping anyone who put their finger over the left hinge after a year out of warranty. That and a few other build quality issues have had me doubting any better than average...

The Thelio does look pretty nice. We've got a Galago Pro at work and damn does the fan on that thing go skits under load; outside of that it is a really nice laptop, the HDPI screen is mint.

That's pretty cool. I still wish they would use AMD CPUs in their laptops though. I hope the next generation will provide more choice there.
