We benchmark our pay to the 90th percentile of San Francisco rates. Same position, same pay, no matter where you live: between $145,000 and $179,000, matched to your experience.
Maybe they're based somewhere cheap, but these two statements seem pretty contradictory

Basecamp's fully remote, and pays very well. They were hiring a Senior Programmer recently:
Ahhhhh, yeah the reduction of 400k wouldn't cover two developers not the 45k number.
