For anyone who is interested in or uses WakaTime, but would prefer a free-software, private alternative, ActivityWatch is pretty cool. It's a bit buggy and hasn't hit 1.0 yet, but I have been using it for a few months and don't have any real complaints.

Question though, does anyone here actually make use of this kind of personal data? I just like it because I think it's cool, but I'm kind of struggling to learn any lessons from the data I have collected, or to use it in any meaningful way (aside from realizing that I use my computer too much).

Wakatime doesn't track how much time you spend on a specific program, it tracks how much time you spend working on specific git projects (I don't know if it works with other version control systems). I use it to track how much time I spend working on personal projects and see if I meeting my goals.

The editor plugins and cli utility are open source, so is possible to create a self-hosted and open source alternative and some have tried, but as far I'm aware Wakatime is still the best option.

Edit: I took a quick look at the ActivityWatch documentation and it could really work as an alternative to Wakatime, I'm definitely going to give it a try.

Wakatime is a tool that helps you track how much time you've spend working on specific projects. The post is not as insightful as the Stackoverflow Developer Survey but it is still interesting.
