Heya!
I was invited last night to this august gathering of posters, and was immediately befuddled to see TV, Music, and other shared art forms with their own areas...but art and creative writing are consigned to Misc. Makes me feel a little like a lone drummer wading into the pool. Or perhaps a wind up monkey with cymbals. XD
So~ Let's get this party started!
What are peoples' feelings about arts and/vs crafts?
I got my degree in molesting paper and canvas with multitude of media. I was also intensively domesticated with the skills of knitting, crochet, quilting, ceramics, lei making, garment sewing, paper arts... Actually, now that I've listed this all out, I'm not sure if I'm economically viable as a life form. But! if you count my unfinished projects, I'm a millionaire.
Watching the Etsy movement and the Pinterest place, the cultural movement in crafts seems to be stratifying. The difference between crafters practicing an art form and the casual creation of seems to be getting farther and farther apart. Casual creation is almost entirely by kits or off the shelf items used in a limited number of ways. It's deliciously lego like. However, the serious crafter is no longer limited to an apprenticeship transmission of skills. With access to all the information in the world, the depth of art displayed in crafting is beautiful to see.

Deciding which groups to create is a bit of a tricky balancing act when the site is small. Not having a dedicated group for a particular topic definitely makes people feel a bit discouraged about posting things, but I also didn't want to create too many groups and end up with a bunch of them being almost totally inactive.
I do think a sort of DIY/craft/art-ish group would be a good one to have before long though, do you have any suggestions for a name? Or is it too difficult to try to combine them all under the same term (as the article you linked kind of describes).
I don't think it would be too hard to have a category of Creative Output, with sub categories of things like visual arts, 3D crafts, writing, music/mixing, cosplaying... I didn't mean to sound...

I didn't mean to sound critical about the categories! ^_^;; I expected that eventually something would exist. Just wanted to plant a flag showing that there's interest!
Nah, it's a definite gap that I think we should add a group for at some point. ~creative is actually a really interesting potential name that I hadn't thought of, so thanks for that.

I think that arts/crafts and writing should be separate. From my experience, writing tends to get drowned out by art because it's easier to consume. But I would be on board with both.

It makes one want to redefine the lines...
