Hey guys! Recently within the art community (though it is in its dying throes), there was an artist meme making the rounds. Referred to as hashtag: artstyleblend or artstylebendchallenge, this meme had artists asking followers what the most prominent features of their art were. With that, they would try to draw the exact opposite. This resulted in both hilarious and beautiful works, as well as being an exercise to flex your art muscles and push yourself outside of what you're comfortable with.
With that lengthy introduction out of the way, here is my own result! I drew this at the beginning of September. I have not nearly enough followers/engagement online to get answers, so I asked some friends what they thought of my style and did my best to do the opposite. I personally REALLY enjoyed this art meme. The first character is my "usual" style and the character on the right is my style "bend" (PS I just realized I put "artstyleblendchallenge", using blend instead of blend on the work itself; guess I need an editor lol).
I tried to be actively aware of techniques and styling I normally use and tried to discard those. I normally solidly outline everything, including hair, so I tried to focus more on shape and contrast, if that even make sense! I don't talk about my art process a whole lot, sorry folks!
In an effort to shift the spotlight, I figured I'd share some of my favorite art style bends I've come across (be forewarned, these are twitter links as this is where the meme was the hottest): japhers luwiizuh vonnabeee

A small aside, this exercise was also interesting in seeing who all had an understanding on their art style and how they draw, and those who might not. Where's the cut off? Is it simply skill based? Is it about being comfortable with art?
For those on tildes who are both familiar or unfamiliar with the art community, what do you think of this particular art meme? What about artist memes as a whole? If you are an artist, do you participate in any of these memes/challenges?
I'm not at all familiar with the art community, but I think it's a really cool meme. I used to do this with my music. I'd take a song I wrote and redo it in a different style. I'd change up the...
I'm not at all familiar with the art community, but I think it's a really cool meme. I used to do this with my music. I'd take a song I wrote and redo it in a different style. I'd change up the orchestration, the rhythm, the complexity, etc. It was a lot of fun! I'd love to see other types of art memes like this.
That's so radical! Wow, it totally went over my head how it might be implemented into other creative communities! It can be a lot of fun to remake, remix, and just plain try out new things. I'd...

I'd like to see more art memes like this too! I think a lot of art memes are starting to become more focused in experimenting and trying new things, on top of drawing things you love. But how frequent these things pop up is a roll of the dice, because they're memes.
This is very cool! I think it's interesting that the characters still feel like they could exist together in the same work, yet their different visual styles give them distinct contrast. Also,...

Also, they reminded me of a webcomic I like: The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal. The artist uses slightly different techniques to convey the two characters which makes their composition part of their characterization. Amal is more uptight and restrained, and he's depicted with clearer, sharper lines and flatter coloring. TJ, meanwhile, is more freewheeling and adventurous, and is conveyed in ways that are more scribbley and imprecise.
Your characters and the way they're depicted remind me of them, and I could see your characters undergoing a similar sort of "odd couple" pairing should they be involved in the same story.
ohmygosh that means so much to me!!! Thank you! I'm so happy you think that, especially because they are part of the same story. I can't express how happy your comment makes me <333 And ooooh I am...

And ooooh I am digging that webcomic! The style and paneling are super good. I'm definitely gonna be reading through it.
