The entire series of posts about shutters on the linked site are full of information about the history, function, and design of shutters.

The linked article discusses when different types of shutters were used, louvered shutter direction, shutter size errors, shutter shape errors, and shutter hanging errors.

One unfortunate side effect of reading the linked article is consciously noticing all the incorrectly hung shutters that you pass by for the next few weeks.

@mycketforvirrad, would you mind moving this back to design? It’s primarily about the historical architecture and design of shutters not home improvement products or processes.

Why would this sound wrong? This sounds intuitively correct.

If shutters are closed the louvers direct the rain-water out and away from the window. While this may sound wrong

In some ways it must sound wrong to many people because so many shutters have louvers in the wrong direction. My guess is some combination of (1) most people are used to seeing cheap decorative vinyl shutters hung with the louvers in the wrong direction so it seems to be how it should be and (2) cheap decorative vinyl shutters with louvers in the proper direction would direct rain towards the house.

But I agree it sounds intuitively correct.
