The Birkenstock building off Highway 101 in Novato, known for its mid-century design with gleaming white triangular peaks on its roof, is set to be transformed into a new art and design museum.

The Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity, an organization dedicated to the design spirit of Charles and Ray Eames, creators of the famed Eames chair, acquired the 88.5-acre campus. It plans to transform the buildings into a museum "that holds an array of immersive art exhibitions, makerspaces and workshops, high-impact educational programming, accessible public open space, culinary and retail offerings, with a portion of the Eames Collection and family archives on display, among other collections and works," the institute said in a news release.
