I thought this was a pretty neat article, and unlike most articles promoting books this actually did get me interested in the book. It's really hard to understand just how large chemical engineering, particularly in petroleum science seems to have impacted the modern world. It'd be really cool to know what the world would look like if we'd had to go without petroleum products.

The history of the paint industry is pretty fascinating. My husband has been a painter since the early 80s (mostly in the bicycle industry) and the chemistry has come a looong way. We have a decent collection of "fordite" as well. Sometimes he'll paint a number of colors over a few days and the little fordite nuggets are super cool.

Here's another great video essay on the evolution of automotive paint (with lots of cool factory videos): https://youtu.be/b_hgPinCZks

Not only are we getting faster at making things, the end products are invariably far better too.

What impresses me about auto paint is the UV resistance - both color loss/fade and surface getting chalky. And the UV resistance the plastic bezels - turn / stop / running lights. UV stabilizing additives!

I wonder how much car companies pay for paint - could be $30/gallon minimum? (retail double that?)

I find it odd - that in a modern world where people routinely change things like screen wallpapers, the rubber moulding surround phones and watches, hair dyes, nail salons and being able to change the exterior of their house - someone isn’t frantically looking for a way for car paint to be easily customised.

Like being able to get your car serviced and the colour changed from blue to red within a few hours. (Trying not to be sexist) but I know cars with that feature would be very marketable to women and still appeal to men.

How durable are vinyl wraps? Do all the little stones and grit that get embedded in a traditional wax – which can be gently cleaned off and re-applied at home nearly good as new for minor debris – create a bunch of tiny permanent tears in the vinyl? I’m having flashbacks to all the sand and road salt that came with the snows every winter growing up, on top of the normal road and break bits.

Waterborne car paint fascinates me. You get some mixed up. Black let's say. You put some of the paint on an actual car (touch up) it goes on green, purple, brown whatever anything but black...then...

You get some mixed up. Black let's say.

You put some of the paint on an actual car (touch up) it goes on green, purple, brown whatever anything but black...then it dries and it's a solid black.
