Very illuminating video in a lot of ways. If the nuance dial had been set lower, this would have just been a debunking video, but because he knows his stuff so well, he seizes on a viral video, explains the surprising phenomena behind it (an object of ongoing study no less!) but contextualises it among the far more significant other factors in predicting flooding. Positive, engaging and informative.

This video, while well-produced and well-argued, is pretty much bunk in my book, since it doesn't touch on the biggest factor at play which is compaction. Especially w.r.t. clay soils, I'd expect compaction to be a full order of magnitude more significant than hydrophobicity.

If anyone wants to prove this to themselves: take two pieces of compacted coco coir, and place them in separate containers. Add a cup of water to one and let sit an hour; keep the other dry.

Then add a quart of water to both. Guess which one is going to absorb far, far faster?

Proper treatment of the impact of compaction of flood risk, for reference: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jhydrol.2017.12.052
