I've been watching a lot of watch repair videos in recent years and I kinda doubt the premise here that fancier calendars are rarer because of the expense. I think that may have been true 100 years ago, but the watch makers I watch will fix up cheap watches sometimes, and they're often way more complex than "expensive" ones. Lots of cheap plastic mass produced components that are very hard to fit together or aren't designed to last. The engineering is kinda amazing though.
I'd guess fancier calendars just aren't in demand, just like mechanical watches aren't.
