It sounds like they're keeping the headcount though. Just outsourcing it. I'm an American working in Asia for a company wih an American tech branch, and generally the employees from it suck. They can't learn or grow or adapt, and they frequently expect us to optimize for their happiness over getting things done (i.e. "I don't feel fulfilled working on <x> so you need to find someone else" rather than just "yeah, I'll put in the boring work to get my paycheck so I can enjoy my life"). Ive hired a shit load of indians in the last few years who are soooooo much better. It's fucking night and day. Im not surprised to see tech investing more there.

I've been watching a lot of watch repair videos in recent years and I kinda doubt the premise here that fancier calendars are rarer because of the expense. I think that may have been true 100 years ago, but the watch makers I watch will fix up cheap watches sometimes, and they're often way more complex than "expensive" ones. Lots of cheap plastic mass produced components that are very hard to fit together or aren't designed to last. The engineering is kinda amazing though.

I'd guess fancier calendars just aren't in demand, just like mechanical watches aren't.

Sometimes that films that look fucking incredible have "shitty cgi" (basically any marvel film in the last 3 years), and sometimes that 80s films look amazing when the practical effects look pretty awful and stuff (big trouble in little china for instance).

The headline here is just some driver musing. The better quote from this article is probably "According to Motorsport.com, the paint believed to be coating the Chinese GP is actually a "bitumen surface treatment" that's commonly used on Chinese roads (and even in the U.S.) for sealing and waterproofing. " That quote in the title (which again, is just some rando musing) is the only part of the article that even tries to imply the surface wasn't resurfaced.

I.e. this is a racist article trying to fuel a stereotype of Chinese things being inferior to their western counterparts.

There are lots of services out there that use data based methods to investigate media bias though. Use something like that and not your gut.

"That rationale means Apple doesn’t have any right to protect their users or their products from malicious actors"

This is an exaggeration. Windows explicitly has built in anti virus just to kill malicious code. OSes have huge guardrails put up to prevent malicious code. Apple has plenty of right and ways to stop malicious actors without requiring every penny to go through their coffers.

I'm a low level it manager. I wonder what I do a lot of days. Most of my job now is people stuff. I meet with all my reports for a half hour every week and keep up on what they're doing. It's probably 10 separate projects at a time they're juggling. I need to know low level details of all of them as much as possible. But I've given up on that often and just facilitate "joe will know about that!" Or "jim had the same problem you're having a month ago, ask him".

Anyway 1:1 meetings eat up an entire day+ but are critical to keeping them happy and getting them promotions and stuff. I also meet with some people above me to report on it. And we own some systems that are hubs for others so waste another day probably dealing with complaints and issues. All just meetings though. Understanding the problem. Finding the right owner. I never actually solve anything. So many fucking meetings, but they have to happen to resolve conflicts and keep stuff going.

Occasionally I go to design reviews and try to throw out bombs. "Why don't we do this or that? Have you thought about this thing that could cause issues?" Etc. again, doing nothing palpable, but there's 1000 systems interplaying. Having both low level and high level views represented and looking for issues has to happen. Having people who will embarrass themselves and throw out bad ideas or complaints is critical. The lower engineers are generally either too focused on small things or too nervous to talk which hampers them.

It's not worth 4x what a teacher makes. It's not worth the 4x I make over my reports. I do have to make critical decisions. I am way way way more on the hook for bad ones than my reports. It's stressful. But also, capitalism is a bitch who doesn't care what you do and tends to reward gambling mosy of all.

The web honestly doesn't need a list that recycles it's views. Web rendering is crazy fucking fast compared to native mobile frameworks and doesn't jank even with list that's hundreds of thousands of items long. Browser rendering is already moved off the main thread and uses tiled rendering just because of this shit. It sucks at animations where layout changes (so are mobile frameworks), but it's great at scrolling huge documents.

I don't really think you want shared libraries on the web shipped like this. It throws away privacy and opens you up to insanely dangerous cross site scripting attacks.

I don't really get the feminist comparison here. Feminism is anout promoting women's rights and removing societal obstacles in the way of them. Men... Don't need that, do they? Like I've got mental problems. I have low confidence and self esteem. I have crippling social anxiety. I'm a crazy introvert. A lot of it leads to me struggling to succeed at work. I have to figure out how to deal with that, but being a man isn't a barrier for me.

I feel like there's a ton of self help books and materials out there for someone like me. I hate them. I've dropped therapy multiple times because I find it useless as well, but it's there and lots of other men seem to use it.

I doubt there are fewer charlitans on the women's side than the men's. Mel Robins isn't "toxic" I guess, but she's just spewing shit that "sounds nice" to people ir that they want to believe is true.

I always thought college names were stupid, till I moved to the bay and saw how incestuous MIT grads were. I've heard groups trying to do get togethers from my alma mater and thought, "why would I want to spend time with people who went to school when I wasn't there?" But they love it. They hire each other. They talk about teachers and say "I dont think we should hire him because he was an RA with professor <blank>". They'd stand around and read the college rankings every year as if they were real.

There's people whose whole lives revolve around where they spent college and they're responsible for hiring some really good paying jobs. It's still baffling to me.
