In podcasts, Donaldson tells hosts that he goes so hard, he won’t stop working until he burns out and isn’t able to do anything at all. With a laugh, he admits that he has a mental breakdown “every other week.” If he ever stops for a breather, he says, he gets depressed. MrBeast is so laser-focused on generating content on YouTube that he describes his personality as “YouTube.” He acknowledges that this brutal approach to videos, which has cratered many creators over the years, is not healthy. “People shouldn’t be like me. I don’t have a life, I don’t have a personality,” he said in a podcast recorded in 2023.

That really worried me. I mean, I'm not a fan of MrBeast, I think his content is a little too white-knight-esque for my liking, and I usually don't gravitate to videos where I'm being screamed at for most of the runtime, but this... I dunno, this humanised him more than I ever thought was possible. Yeah, he might be unfathomably rich, but this gig is clearly destroying him. Surely there's something to be said about what the attention economy crash did not only to viewers but also to creators.

I don't have much to say about the bulk of the piece -- I've never been a YouTube guy (or even a personality Twitch guy); most of that content just doesn't appeal to me -- but I did grab that exact quote to highlight here myself. That sounds like such an awful way to go through life. And it's absolutely not just him experiencing that.

There was a R6: Siege player whose videos I used to follow whose name I'm having a hard time recalling. Serenity, maybe? Anyway -- he sort of just vanished one day and stopped uploading videos. Eventually he shared that his entire life had come to revolve around getting content for his channels. He was making microwave meals because anything else meant longer time away from the game. He was sleeping in a recliner next to his computer so that he could just get up and get on and spend his entire day there.

This is a problem with the system. It's not healthy.

I don’t think it’s anything new. It’s the curse of the independent entrepreneur, when you are your own business, every hour you “waste” feels like money slipping out of your hands. Some people manage to get into a good headspace, some don’t.

It’s no different than when Musk brags about sleeping for 2 hours a day or whatever.

In the end, when you are independent, it is up to you to have a healthy work-life relationship. That is wha being independent means.

You tube is crazy for this. I've been on YouTube since the very beginning. I probably spend 30 min to an hour on YouTube during an average day. But every time I see how it's a big deal that a massively popular YouTuber is quitting after a decade of making daily videos, (or is in trouble over shitty behavior) it's almost always someone I've either never heard of.

Think of how odd it would be if someone who watches a movie every night never heard of Tom Hanks or Spielberg.

Or if a big bookworm had never heard of Steven King. Not even just didn't like him, or never read one of his books, but somehow while making constant trips to libraries and book stores they never even came across the name.

I mean, if you had some kind of living bookstore that was able to fold dimensions and the store had decided, since you've never browsed the horror section, suspense section, or never put your fingers near a Richard Bachman or Dean Koontz book that it was merely going to fold Stephen King away from you... Not out of reach, if you ask for it, but if you weren't looking for it it wouldn't show it to you - you might not know he exists.

Kind of like Oprah's Book Club, right? People got big off of that but if you asked me to name more than one I'd never recall the author's name.

Not a great comparison, IMO: youtube has 500hrs of content uploaded every minute, while watching a movie every night is barely 500hrs a year.

Not arguing with whatever point you're trying to make, but you've compared the totality of youtube content with the amount of movie content watched by one person. They are unrelated.

I think the point was scale matters, and that is related to what an individual's scope. There probably aren't 2000 hours of cinema produced every year. So an individual can almost consume all modern cinema and get a census. They probably won't, but they can get close as an enthusiast.

I can probably watch 2000 hours of YouTube videos on a very specific movie (let alone a franchise) and still not consume all the videos made on the topic. Analysis, remixes, meme edits, what if scenario's, top 10 whatever, etc. You may be a "YouTube watcher" but by all accounts and purposes you're not watching "YouTube" and what the masses watch, you're watching Star wars prequel videos, never leaving that bubble for the larger bulk of YouTube and what they do.

It may be a platform but YouTube is large enough to consider it more like a library for a medium. No one would ever say they have read every book in a library. So someone who focuses on reading Sci-Fi shouldn't feel bad that they don't know who Shel Silverstein or Shirley Jackson is.

You're right, it was maybe a clunky way to get my point across.

Since recognizing an actor/creator is an event that requires content to be created by a given actor and then consumed by a given viewer, I was trying to say that a content consumption rate of 500hrs per year is a drop in the bucket compared to the content creation rate of 500hrs per minute (which far out-paces Hollywood), and therefor equating the likelihood of OP's two proposed events happening is not apt and becoming even less so every day.

There are, of course, other reasons that a Youtube viewer would have a different likelihood of creator recognition as well, such as with the selection algorithms that force you down to narrower sets of similar channels to scroll through. Or that the landscape of creators on Youtube is vastly wider than the credited actors in Hollywood. Etc.

            Perhapse I'm missing something though.

Yeah. The biggest personalities on youtube happen to skew towards a much younger crowd (because they have the time and are more excited by their bombastic shock jock attitude). It's not that shocking if someone who watched lots of flim noir and drama's doesn't know the names of the current batch of action movie heroes. Totally different markets.

I easily watch more YouTube than you do, including some pretty big names (like Linus Tech Tips and Mark Rober). Enough that I happily pay for Premium and primarily watch YouTube on my TV. I have have never seen Mr. Beast recommended either. Everything I know about him is through non-YouTube sources like this article and these comments. It's kind of wild to me.

Nothing I've heard about his style of content interests me though, so I'll echo the sentiment that YouTube's algorithm seems to work.

YouTube is indeed pretty good these days on laser focusing on what you watch. But you click one click bait video on Beast or Crypto or cat videos and that is now your new feed. Easy to fix of you remove from history, but it's kind of crazy how quickly your feed can shift from a small curiosity.

(cat videos are eternal though. I just accepted it like I did my own cat some decade ago that walked in one rainy day and never left).

I never really got cat videos until I got a cat. Always thought it was a weird internet exaggeration. After I had a kid they've mostly been supplanted by baby videos.

Neither have I, I only know what he does thru people mentioning it on other social media. It's hard to deny his influence, though. I'm aware of him, and I know he's the most subscribed channel, and just from that he's built a brand so massive every sugar-addicted ten year old knows his filmography by heart.

If you ever open YouTube without being logged in, his face is all over the place. If you like a few channels, odds are you give YouTube enough information to know if you'll actually watch them.
