    I was randomly curious how quartz -based clocks worked and found this article that satisfied every bit of my curiosity. Most of this stuff is over my head but fun to read. Like the author, I also imagined a gem-like crystal inside every watch.

    Pretty cool. I knew the absolute basics, kind of ending at that I knew the crystal could be tuned during manufacturing to control oscillation frequency and that they'd make it a power of 2 (to make the counting circuit easy). A full teardown of one is the kind of thing I don't think I would've ever thought to seek out, but glad it showed up.
