I've honestly never understood why people thought that companies making billions hand over fist were worthy of any form of subsidy. They should be pulled as soon as possible, but we all know our collectively spineless politicians who already ignore the UN at the best of times will do nothing as usual. Can't bite the hand that feeds them.

We can’t afford to delay on this. The interventions are too slow and too minute. I’m glad it’s making headlines, even if it doesn’t represent commitment yet.

This isn't going to happen in the United States for the same reason a gas tax never happend.

It would be political suicide for any politician who implemented it.

Voters would not take kindly to someone intentionally doing something that would result in gas prices going up.

It is similar to the agricultural subsidies in the United States. Nixon started subsidizing meat production to get food prices down. The U.N. says that meat production is as much a greenhouse effect problem as transportation. Political suicide for any politician who intentionally votes for anything that raises food prices.

“Humanity has opened the gates to hell. Horrendous heat is having horrendous effects.” Guterres said.

“We must make up time lost to foot-dragging, arm-twisting and the naked greed of entrenched interests raking in billions from fossil fuels”

António Guterres, the secretary-general of the United Nations, called for an end to fossil fuel subsidies around the globe, which topped $7 trillion in 2022, according to analysis from the International Monetary Fund.

Guterres made the comments in a speech during the Climate Ambition Summit at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Wednesday.

If nothing changes, the world is on a track toward a 2.8 degree Celsius temperature rise, or more than 5 degrees Fahrenheit, per Guterres.

Globally, there has been an unprecedented amount of investment in clean energy sources, and that is encouraging, “but we are decades behind,” Guterres said, calling on developed nations to reach net zero emissions as close as possible to 2040, and for emerging economies, 2050.

Specifically, Guterres said OECD nations need to have plans to stop burning coal by 2030 and the rest of the world needs to stop burning coal by 2040.
