I can still remember a college chemistry professor saying that one industry's trash is another industry's resource.

A study by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) and the Technical University of Berlin now shows how green hydrogen from sunlight can become profitable: part of the hydrogen is used to upgrade raw biomass-derived chemicals into high-value chemicals for industry. This co-production concept is very flexible; the same plant can be used to produce different by-products as required.

Historically I've thought Hydrogen as fuel was a bit of a corporate ruse. The generation of hydrogen (at least until recently) has been more costly (environmental and dollar) than other forms of energy. Not to say Hydrogen doesn't have good uses as a "clean" energy source.

If we can continue to make strides into making Hydrogen clean energy all the way through, I think the benefit would be enormous. Hydrogen cars were the favorite of automakers, but aren't viable, especially as EVs get better. But if things like heavy transport can supplement an EV engine with hydrogen for extra power/distance, i think it would be Important for the transport industry.
