My local electric co-op has been touting the Palisades restart as an important step towards ensuring electricity reliability with increasing use of intermittent renewable sources and decreasing use of carbon-based sources.
If a U.S. reactor has to be added for baseload, Palisades isn't the one I'd choose for a test. There are significant concerns about the remaining reliable and safe lifespan and operational quality of this particular reactor [PDF warning].
