Rosie Barnes discusses ways to reduce the negative local and global environmental effects of mining, including greenhouse gas emissions from processing, transportation fuel emissions, water and soil pollution, and deforestation and other natural habitat destruction..

She remarks at the beginning of the video that mining is not, and cannot (by definition), be considered sustainable "in a technical sense." She describes some of the challenges of improving processes associated with emissions, noting that the complexity and uniqueness of different processes makes it impossible to find a single solution for every single issue. However, she goes into more depth about ways to greenify the mining of iron (used to make steel) and copper (used in many electronics).

Mining these high-volume metals can be made somewhat greener by using electric (or green hydrogen) trains and trucks at industry scale, as well as other alternative fuels; and better material processing processes. In copper, new techniques to blast apart slag can probably halve emissions, and something approaching net zero can be achieved through general improvements to green transportation efficiency.

Barnes also calls out a few mining companies who have successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions significantly. Industry are genuinely interested in zero-emissions processes because it can conceivably make operations cheaper than existing, mature, and energy-intensive processes. However, she also warns of "greenwashing" from corporate actors.

Long-term, Barnes states that a "circular economy" the emphasizes recycling over mining is necessary for true sustainability in industry.

It's mainly a way for me to self-moderate. Filling out the comment box makes me re-evaluate whether I truly want to share what I've written. Sometimes I realize that what I wrote was uncharitable, wrong, or not relevant. I noticed that I kept getting into tiffs with people here about insignificant things and this has been my solution.

My humor is pretty dry which can be lost through text. Some people have told me that they can't identify sarcasm/humor in writing even when it's not that dry, so I thought this would be helpful for them.

Archiving wasn't part of the thought process, though I guess it also has that use.
