I read somewhere that there are thousands of lichen in the Pacific Northwest that don't grow anywhere else, and that new varieties are discovered often.
When I first moved into my house, I was alarmed by how much moss was growing on my trees, especially the apple trees because I knew how those were supposed to look. A bit of research taught me that it was all lichen of many different kinds on just one tree. It's completely safe for the tree because of the lack of roots; while moss feeds off trees lichen does not.
