I used to work in a bioinformatics plant lab, this is the solution everyone is trying. If we can just speed up the adaptation process we can save a species, the problem is that its hard and takes forever with a lot of trial and error because you have to pick genes which work, work long term, and are readily picked by the natural reproduction process (so many processes exist to specifically kick out our manufactured genes!)
So, we have to pick and choose which species to save, and right now we’re struggling just trying to save our cash crops. I’m hoping that advancements in AI will help speed this along, and it already kinda has since no one has to code their own pipelines by hand any more, but we still have a long way to go before saving a random coral algae species via this method is an actual real solution that will work long term.
