    AirNow.gov and PurpleAir.com recommended in the article are both good, and pull on different sensor networks, so can sometimes differ slightly. Also, make sure to turn off indoor sensors, as they can be strong outliers in either direction.
    For the bay area, the SF Chronicle's Air Quality Map has wind patterns and the active fires as well, so you can see where the smoke is coming from and going to.

    Short answer: just go to Purple Air's map. I'm checking it multiple times a day. Unfortunately, it loads slowly. This is one of the few websites that should probably be a mobile app, but they don't have one.

    It's also not a forecast. I have been seeing experimental smoke forecasts tweeted by NWSBayArea, but recently they started posting them on weather.gov.

    It looks Purple Air sensors are being displayed on airnow.gov as "low cost sensors". To get the data to match, you have to select the "US EPA" conversion on Purple Air's map.
