Funny you posted this! I work with Spent Nuclear Fuel, and would be happy to answer any questions about the subject.

Where does the spent fuel you work with come from, and what do you do with it?

I would be willing to do a casual AMA. I did something similar by accident when I asked if anyone here was in the nuclear sector. Who would I talk to about scheduling that?

Yeah, no need to schedule or anything. Just pick a time that's convenient for you and go for it. Threads on Tildes can stay active for longer periods of time, so it's not as essential to schedule,...

I just found this channel today and it is a treasure trove of high quality videos pertaining to energy, economics, physics, etc. Can't recommend it enough.

I've seen complaints about nuclear waste being stored at the plant, but this actually makes a lot of sense. Why bury it when you can watch it, and crack the cask open if you decide you need it again?

that's the difference between storage and disposal. for a good reason, or for a bad reason, or for no reason at all, now, in ten years, in one century or in 20 centuries, with good intentions,...

for a good reason, or for a bad reason, or for no reason at all, now, in ten years, in one century or in 20 centuries, with good intentions, with bad intentions, or just because.

      Yep, disposal is preferable.

Addendum after watching the video : there is something about re-processing too. Bulk, unprocessed spent fuel as done in the US and shown in this lecture (and there) might eventually become raw material as it still contains fissile elements. In France, spent fuel is systematically re-processed at La Hague facility. The ultimate waste is then very nasty and totally useless, and disposal by burying in deep geological repository makes more sense.

Actually, it's a chicken and egg problem : why do something now when you can decide not to decide and postpone actually acting at least until the next election while maintening a slight opportunity of profit ?
