The wolf that discovered California: Nearly a century after the last wolf was eradicated in the state, a lone female arrived and established a pack. Not everyone is cheering.

An informative and nuanced article. I consider myself an environmentalist, but struggle to reconcile that identity with the challenges that many protections can create for the people living in rural areas. It's not like reintroducing wolves to California has the same victims as capping industrial greenhouse gas emissions. My initial suggestion would have been a statewide reimbursement system like the one mentioned in the article, but learning that it doesn't seem to alleviate distrust from ranchers in practice is disappointing. One of the big problems we face in this country is the complete disregard of lifestyles that are foreign to us, and this definitely goes both ways on the political spectrum. Many environmentalists I know would probably say that the ranchers should just "deal with it," but that's easier to say if you live in San Francisco than Lassen County. I don't think I know any ranchers, but I can't help but sympathize. I hope there's a solution to this that's able to sufficiently balance naturalistic sentiments with human needs.
